Great explication and I agree about Dunaway. She does seem older than Welch. She did get stuck in “bad women” roles, although that description isn’t quite descriptive enough. I think “hard” is also important to mention. The roles she played were “hard women” and those roles did make her seem older than her years.
and it carried on beyond the 1970s, with The Wicked Lady and Mommie Dearest in the 1980s, to name a couple.
I wish I had never seen Mommie Dearest because after watching it, every time I watched a Dunaway performance, all I could see was the “hardness” of her Joan Crawford portrayal. And it sadly made her look ugly. (Those hideous eyebrows.) The only Dunaway film that doesn’t give that vibe is Bonny and Clyde, even when she’s shooting people.
