Suitable for my child?

Hi, i just bought the DVD of Holy Mountain and i was wondering if i can get my 13 year old boy to watch with me?

Kids, especially thirteen year olds wouldn't be damaged by a film like this, nudity & preversion are a natural part of life and he/she will probably deal with a great deal of it in their personal life, so no harm no foul.
Its a visually stunning movie, with wild absurd twists, and plays on classic motifs. But getting the average thirteen year old engaged and interested in a movie like this with a pretty incohesive and erratic narrative would be challenging.

I am fourteen, and I will tell you right now that the only person my age who would be entertained by this film is somebody who wants to seek it out by their own choice.

I watched El Topo a long time ago, and was left scratching my head... but a recent interest in the Surrealist artistic movement reinvigorated my desire to see this film. I got it from netflix, and thought it was one of the most amazing movies I've ever seen. Any given shot of the first half hour or so could be considered a masterpiece of surrealism. I had no knowledge of the Tarot before watching this movie, so there was a lot of visual symbolism that was lost on me, but I loved the film regardless, and got some of the religious imagery and blatant satire (I don't know how you couldn't). I gave it a 10/10 and bought the box set (I decided that if El Topo was half as good as this, it would be worth seeing again).

But still, you kind of have to know exactly what it is you're getting into. I'm not sure how open minded kids my age would be to this film that seems to defy genre, forumla, and the medium of cinema all together! Don't force somebody to watch this movie. "It is the master who seeks the disciple!"

Thirteen is an awkward age for kids. There discovering things about themselves that they never know. I am not saying The Holy Mountain will damage them or screw them up, but they definitely will not understand this movie at all and probably be immature about the whole thing. Most adults find this movie messed up and confusing, imagine what a thirteen year old is going to think. In the end it's all up to you. I would watch the movie by yourself first (if you haven't watched it already) and decide yourself. If you do decide to let him watch, watch it with him so you can help him understand. I personally wouldn't let a thirteen year old watch it. If it were me, I would wait at the minimum, sixteen years old. I also personally don't think it's gonna start up philosophical conversations either. I am an artsy creative person and the first thing I thought about this movie is "wow, that was messed up." Almost everybody I have met feel the same way. It's still an epic movie though.

I like how someone established in the beginning that this is someone trying to get a rise and there is still a conversation going on about this. The film is not that disturbing, a large part of the mysticism (no pun intended) around it is that it was a "banned" film. The reason for the ban was copyright issues however, not the content. Alejandro Jordowsky, like any New Age Guru, suffers from delusions of grandeur and this film is proof. Like Stewart Home said "Chuckles Jordowsky makes a good trip flick".

Sigh. No, it's not suitable for a 13 year old. I'm 19 and could barely make head or tail of it, and some of the violence (especially towards animals) could be upsetting.

Seriously, why would you want to subject a 13 year old to this kind of thing anyway? I'm thinking troll.

Unless that you have a problem with your 13 year old seing nudity....

or animal cruelty, or weird ****ed up *beep*

If you raised your kid to have an open mind and understand the world (the REAL world, not the one most people believe in) then there shouldnt be a problem with them viewing it. If your kid is like most idiotic, hormone controlled teenagers then it probably wouldnt be in their best interest. Its not that bad really, its just that immature kids wont get anything from it. LOL it might even frighten them to see reality at its finest. Stick to the teletubbies or barney or whatever the hell retarded shows are on for kids these days. ::shrug:: LOL...

sorry i'm new here, what the hell is a troll

wish I had seen this film at age 13. I wouldn't have understood what was going on, but I would've sat through it. hmmm...actually it may have been a little tough for me to get past the nudity at that age, not that I would have objected to it. The issue would've been as a 13 yr old boy, it would have been tough for me to seperate artful nudity from porn. in other words, I would need to take a long intermission.

reply

I've since found that out for myself but thanks anyway.

reply

Why would you want to? How about showing him something that's actually for children? And why are you asking strangers on the internet for permission on what to show your children anyway, you twit? No wonder kids are so screwed up and socially stunted these days.

reply

Hahah, so true. Too many kids have seen Jodorowsky films! Ban this *beep* !

reply

I would probably have loved this one as a 13 year old. But watching it with my parents back then, with all the suggested sex and all? Now THAT would have left scarred for life.
