I've Read Denzel Washington Wants to Remake This Film

I gotta admit I haven't seen too many blaxploitation films, which is such a shame. Though I've heard the amazing soundtrack, I haven't seen the film yet. Superfly is very much beloved by a lot of people and surprisingly Denzel Washington and Training Day director Antoine Fuqua want to remake this movie. I read the information on BET. com recently. Denzel's already remade one of my all-time favorite movies, The Manchurian Candidate. Now, he may do this movie. Any thoughts about the possibility of a millennium 'Superfly'?

I think what they want to do is a story on the "real" Super Fly, Frank Lucas:

If they ever do re-make Superfly, let's all hope that it is NOT Denzel playing the role. If it is, we'll be subjected to a cleaned-up, improved Priet. No more cocaine sniffing. A Denzel character wouldn't do that. Film makers even changed the personality of a real life person (Frank Lucas) to match the Denzel style, so I'm sure they'd be willing to alter a fictional 1972 character (Priest) to let Denzel be Denzel.

It may be one of Denzel's favorite movies, but I doubt it will ever be remade.

When this movie was first released back in '72, it spurred a great deal of controversy. Many people, including prominent black leaders at that time, thought it was a negative influence, particularly in the way it seemed to glorify the street hustling lifestyle and a drug pusher as a hero. This would most likely explain why, even though the movie was released nearly 40 years ago, "Super Fly" has never been aired on regular TV.

Personally, I think it would be prudent not to remake it, as most movie remakes, similar to movie sequels, suck anyway. Films like this are just attempts on the part of movie producers to try and replicate the box office success of hit movies, but it seldom works the second time around. (Incidentally, the sequel to this movie, "Super Fly TNT," is terrible. It's definitely one of the worst movies, let alone sequels, that I have ever seen.)

I agree with most that is being said on this post board about sticking with the original movie and ditching the idea of a remake. As I'm sure many would agree, time has obviously done a great deal of harm to the clothing fashion aspect of this movie(LOL). But the original movie's storyline, gripping drama, and of course Curtis Mayfield's excellent musical score still stand up quite well today.

Well they were right. The 1970s and blaxploitation was the beginning of the downfall for black Americans. Every modern black stereotype was reborn because of that era.
