I've Read Denzel Washington Wants to Remake This Film

I gotta admit I haven't seen too many blaxploitation films, which is such a shame. Though I've heard the amazing soundtrack, I haven't seen the film yet. Superfly is very much beloved by a lot of people and surprisingly Denzel Washington and Training Day director Antoine Fuqua want to remake this movie. I read the information on BET. com recently. Denzel's already remade one of my all-time favorite movies, The Manchurian Candidate. Now, he may do this movie. Any thoughts about the possibility of a millennium 'Superfly'?

I hate remakes.

I despise Denzel for doing a remake of a brilliant film, "The Manchurian Candidate."

I mean, what's next? "It's a Wonderful Life". I can see it now, Denzel Washington would play a black George Bailey. And Potter would still be an old curmudgeon white man.

Why? Because in Hollywood, the bad guy has to be white and more specifically WASP'y.

Then Denzel Washington could do a remake of "Casablanca"

I can see it now....

God I hope not!

I dont think its really a remake...Superfly was based on Frank Lukas...but i think Tru Blu will be the actual real life story of Lucas...so its not really a remake

Story centers on a 1970s drug kingpin who helped a reporter bring justice to both sides of the law.

Academy Award winner Denzel Washington is re-teaming with Training Day director Antoine Fuqua for Universal Pictures' and Imagine Entertainment's Tru Blu

Tru Blu is based in part on a New York Magazine article by Mark Jacobson. It centers on real-life Harlem drug lord Frank Lucas, who grew up in poverty in the South and rose to power in the early 1970s by smuggling heroin into the U.S. in the caskets of soldiers killed in Vietnam. After detective Richie Roberts finally caught up with him, Lucas went on to help Roberts nail the various players working on both sides of the law who profited from his scheme.

Don't think it will ever happen, a remake of Superfly? Think about the movie and its time period. The only way this could ever make it to screen is to have it set in 1972 with the cars & clothing and styles of the era.
Understand that Superfly was a benchmark in movies (and blaxploitation films in particular).
Priest's ride (his LD/hog) the "threads" and the entire lifestyle of a strong, smart street hustler/drug dealer hadn't been shown and even glorified on the screen before. Yes Shaft came out a year earlier but wasn't even coming from the same direction as SF. This was the first time a realistic view of life on the streets of blacks was shown, with all the grit and violence too. This was a movie that Hollywood would of NEVER made, remember the film was done on a budget of $200,00 grand and took in more than $2 mil playing in small black neighborhoods without a major distributor. The realization that there was a market for this type of story or movie made tinseltown stand up and take notice. Thr term blaxplotation came about BECAUSE of this film. Big studio hopped on the bandwagon and started craking out films for the black market for the quick buck.

Part of the charm and "look" of the film is due to the tight budget and less than professional photo work...I doubt that grity look could or should be recreated. Putting a slick "over the top" Hollywood production on the story would ruin it forever.
Plus, the story, however fresh it was in '72 has been told...both for its time and MANY times since. For example theres Boyz N the Hood, Menace II Society, New Jack City and many more...really they're just variations of the Superfly tale updated for our changes in time.
Let's hope for Denzel, and out of respect for the talent of the late Ron O'Neal, the powers that be leave Superfly to the ages and not remake it.

Touche! I couldn't agree with you more. Let's hope this rumor is not true. Denzel comes from the generation where we tend to have respect for "back in the day". I agree that out of respect for the talent of the late Ron O'Neal, that he and the powers that be leave that project alone.

I cannot imagine trying to recapture the essence and time of that masterpiece. Personally, I think it should have been listed on America's Top 100 movies of all time list, because of what it stood for in the realm of the movie industry, the realism it portrayed, and the messages that Mr. O'Neal conveyed in his commanding performance. During an interview about three years ago, I heard Mr. O'neal say that he did not apologize for taking the role, said he to the interviewer, "If I had not taken the role, would we be talking right now?"

Please, Denzel, leave well enough alone!

reply

Gumb I could not have said it any better. THERE IS NO REMAKING SUPERFLY! The film is just to iconic in so many respects. Now, while everyone knows that the soundtrack is one of the greatest ever, I want to applaud Ron O'Neal's performance. I put his portrayal of Priest right up there with Brando's Don Corleone and Pacino's Tony Montana-and De Niro's Travis Bickle as one of the best screen performances ever.

Most people don't know that Ron O'Neal was a theater trained actor who honed his craft at Karambu( I believe that's the name) theater in Cleveland Ohio. He is one of cinema's great actors who never got his due, and that really upsets me.

I hope he's in heaven with his Maxi coat checking out my man Curtis Mayfield singing Pusherman. It's hard for many people to understand how influential this film was, is, and will continue to be. Obviously you do.

I saw an interview Denzel did for Man On Fire on BET and they asked him if he was doing a remake of Superfly...he said Tru Blu has nothing to do with Superfly but an early article called "The Return of Superfly" caused the confusion...but the two are not related

reply

Boy, if it's anything like Samuel L Jackson's remake of "Shaft", you can just shoot me now.

reply

A modern day Superfly would be completely tastless. They'd use rap, And awful actors and everything. They are brilliant and all, But they can't just lay off of something that was already good.

From dusk till dawn is so cool. I have nothing funny to say about that.

It's near impossible to remake a classic and have people accept it. They should leave this one alone.

reply

Wellllll.... Superfly could be remade, but with a modern twist. It's easy---just model the film after a MODERN DAY GANGSTER AND HIS ANTICS. The main character actor needs to be believeable as evil, though. That's it. The rest will fall into place.

reply

Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe will star in American Gangster, directed by Ridley Scott. It's the story of Frank Lucas and Richie Roberts, and is a highly regarded script for a serious drama.

Don't worry, it won't be a remake of Superfly, which will stand alone as an iconic early 70's film, for good or bad. America Gangster is an examination of a Harlem druglord's [supposedly] true story, and the cop who "turns" him.

Filming is supposed to start late July or early August in NY.

reply

I hope the film does the genre (harlem crime drama) justice. PLEASE, Lord, let the movie makers conduct ALOT of pre-screenings! This is a subject that is easy to screw up. THE BAD GUY MUST BE BELIEVEABLE. (Crossing my fingers). And NO MORE "OUT OF CHARACTER" endings like in "Training Day". It was completely against that character's grain for him to go down so shamefully. Ruined the film for me. DENZEL: IF YOU CAN HEAR ME- DON'T LET THE FILMAKERS BRING YOUR CHARACTER DOWN IN SHAME! BTW, I understand Frack Lucas is still alive.

reply

Superfly is the shizknit! The movie is only surpassed by immortal genius of the soundtrack by Curtis Mayfield.

If a remake is done, how cool would it be for Prince to do the soundtrack? Either him or the Dap-Kings HAVE to do the soundtrack...mebbe both?

reply

Please, I beg you, all producer genies of the realm DO NOT CAST JAMIE FOXX in the remake, if there is one. I am sick to death of seeing Jamie Foxx miscast in dramas. Alert. He is a comedian. Remember, he IMITATED Ray Charles, he didn't create a new character. He is an excellent mimic. NOT A DRAMATIC ACTOR. (Although I did like his performance in Ali). How in the world can you compare Jamie foxx to Ron O'Neal? The only reason Jamie Foxx is being cast in any and every movie right now is because he's the BA winner. Ridiculous.

Prince is a straight up musical genius. Turn him loose on this one and watch the magic.
