How can you not laugh whenever he appears on screen, even in a super-serious disaster movie like this one

At that time Leslie Nielsen was known mostly as a serious actor. It wasn't until later that he broke into comedy.

Because I saw him in a few decades worth of serious roles before he made "Airplane!". In fact, I saw him in "The Poseidon Adventure" eight years before he made "Airplane!".
