I personally love Bunuel's bizarre sense of humor.
to me the funniest scene in the film is the end where the inspector just starts matter-of-factly arresting everyone just as they're sitting down to dinner, the scene where the entire army stops by to interrupt dinner, or when Rafael explains that "leftist guerillas are part of Mirandas 'National Mythology'."
I like a scene in particular. But I don't consider it funny in the strict sense of the word. For me this film is not a comedy, it doesn't correspond the genre. The scene of which I speak is when M Thevenot dreams of the dinner in the colonel's house; they prepare all around of the table and once located, the reflectors turn on, the curtain open up and they discover surprised that they are on a scenario and that there is a public below waiting the representation of a piece. All begin to escape afraid and M Thevenot, perplexed, confused and contrite, realizes that he doesn't have learned his part. In this scene it is the essence of the film for me.
M Thevenot's character is the funniest to me b/c he seems to me to be the most pompous! (the most bourgeois) at the cadaver restaurant the ladies all get up and he replies: 'that's being indiscreet' or his drawn-out dry martini sketch where he calls in the limo driver even! Also, why didn't bulle ogier like the old cellist?

It is an inside joke that Luis Buñuel didn't like the famous cellist Pablo Casals and in another film by Buñuel a cello is chopped up for firewood as another dig at Pablo Casals.

Mme. Thevenot: As a result, once a week they bomb their own troops. Colonel: If they bomb their own troops, they must have their reasons.
Priceless!
Also when the women try to get something to drink at the restaurant and they are out of everything. Sorry, we don't have tee... sorry we don't have coffee or milk... It turns out that they only have water :)

I think this film should appear in all "Great Comedies of All Time" lists, it's hilarious from start to finish! Most current makers of so-called 'comedies' could learn a lot by watching this masterpiece.
A favourite funny moment (in a film full of favourite funny moments to me) is when our heroes are informed at the beginning that the restaurant owner died earlier that afternoon. Bulle Ogier looks at the dead man and says: "In that suit?"
I'm surprised no one's mentioned yet the part where Henri and Alice go to have sex in the garden and the rest of the party think they called the cops on them and left.
We will be cruel to the Germans, and through our cruelty, they will know who we are.
When Simone asks the youngish Ines about her soldier fiancé and is told he broke up with her and that he said she was too old. Simone then asks her how old she is and she says 52. Henri then remarks that she worked for his parents when he was a boy. Ines is serving food during this exchange.
I love how everyone's so polite all the time, even when weird stuff happens. Like when the guy says they're out of tee and they order coffee instead. Then he comes back and tells them they're out of coffee as well. Reminded me of the Monty Python sketch with the cheese shop. Almost expected him to say "I've been deliberately wasting your time."

I laughed out loud in the early scene in the empty restaurant when they hear women wailing and look behind the screen to find that the owner has died earlier in the day and is laid out there - but the waiting staff are still willing to serve the guests.
