Cos he was hungry and that was her job? lol Yeah, that was the way life was. The man worked outside the home and the woman inside and dinner was usually served at the same time. Or as Livvy called it, "Suppa".

I saw this same custom on All in the Family. Archie would be upset if dinner wasn't on the table at six when he got home from work. Couldn't really blame him. He left the house early, had to ride that moving zoo called the subway, worked at a hard physical job all day, rode that same packed subway BACK home in the evening.

Of course that showed played it for laughs. Once when dinner wasn't ready Archie asked, "Whaddya think? I'm like one of those high society guys who eats late, like at 6:15, maybe 6:20?"

I was born in 1954, grew up in the sixties, and dinner was ALWAYS served between five and six.

I saw that women recently. She spent the day running around trying to find the son that took off because a girl called him immature. John Snr gave him permission to do so but Ma wasn’t liking it!

So yeah it was a day out for her and Grandma tagged along.

Her job was to cook.
