Try maybe Kill Baby Kill from Mario Bava, or the Arcane Sorcerer from Pupi Avati... They are both set in Europe, talk about traditional folklore, and have that eerie, creepy feeling to them...
Mark of the Devil (it's actually not supernatural, but it's about inquisition and witch hunts, definitively worth seeing)
Inqusition - Spanish movie from 70s, directed by Paul Naschy
Arcane - sorta Suspiria ripoff, but it's really good on visuals. I believe it's also Italian.
The Devil Rides Out - devil worshiping cult with C. Lee.
Tragic Ceremony - Italian surreal horror about coven of witches\devil worshipers.
Messiah of Evil - a very strange surreal movie about ... the hell if I know. As I said, very strange movie, it's kinda hard to follow, but it has excellent atmosphere and good visuals for low budget movie.
Don't Deliver us from Evil - 1971, mixed with eroticism if I remember it correctly, but I am pretty sure it's about coven.
Curse of the Crimson Alter - witchcraft mixed with bits of HP Lovecraft. It's not the best, but it looks really good on visuals, plus it's kinda "supermovie" of horror, because it has Boris Karloff, Christopher Lee, Barbara Steele and Michael Gough and few other familiar faces from 60s and 70s horror.
Ken Russell's "The Devils"
Mask of Satan \ Black Sunday - Mario Bava classic with Barbara Steele.
The Pit and the Pendulum - Stuart Gordon movie about inquisition, worth seeing, even tho it's 1 million budget movie.
Witche's Hammer (Kladivo na carodejnice) - Czechoslovakian movie about inquisition. Worth seeing in any format. ;)
Several others that were already mentioned.
Few that are bad, but might as well check it out:
Witchery, Prime Evil (early 80s I think),
Newer movies:
End of the Line - it's about some religious cult starting apocalypse.
Starry Eyes - about DW cult, plus your usual "upcoming actress sells her soul to Devil". I didn't like it that much, but it was a well made movie.
Someone mentioned Don't Deliver Us From Evil: it's not a period movie, but it has the same look (also being from 1971) and willing-to-cross-the-line spooky vibe; it's excellent. And it's not a sexploitation movie first as you might guess (a la some good movies such as The Vampire Lovers and some less good movies such as Virgin Witch, Daughters Of Darkness, Vampyres, and, imo, Twins Of Evil). It's a powerful horror movie first with some sexploitation moments in it, like this movie and Cry Of The Banshee.
Well I want to be of any use. (Maybe.) Here's a list of some gothic horror (loosely defined) with my thumbs up or thumbs down:
Curse Of Frankenstein 1957 UP Dracula 1958 UP Blood Of The Vampire 1958 UP The Revenge of Frankenstein 1958 down City of The Dead 1959 down The Brides of Dracula 1960 UP The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll 1960 UP The Tell-Tale Heart 1960 UP The Flesh And The Fiends 1960 down House Of Usher 1960 down Pit And The Pendulum 1961 down Black Sabbath 1963 UP The Whip And The Body 1963 down Tomb Of Ligeia 1964 UP Masque of The Red Death 1964 down Castle Of Blood 1964 down Evil of Frankenstein 1964 down The Black Torment 1964 down Nightmare Castle 1965 down Dracula Prince Of Darkness 1966 UP Frankenstein Created Woman 1966 UP The Blood Beast Terror 1967 down Dance Of The Vampires 1967 down Dracula Has Risen From The Grave 1968 down Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed 1968 down The Blood Beast Terror 1968 down The Oblong Box 1969 down Blood On Satan's Claw 1970 UP Cry of The Banshee 1970 UP The Horror Of Frankenstein 1970 UP I Monster 1970 UP Scars Of Dracula 1970 down Taste The Blood Of Dracula 1970 down The Vampire Lovers 1970 UP Blood From The Mummy's Tomb 1971 down Countess Dracula 1971 down Demons of The Mind 1971 down Dr. Jekyll And Sister Hyde 1971 down Hands Of The Ripper 1971 down Lust For A Vampire 1971 down Twins of Evil 1971 down Vampire Circus 1971 UP The Creeping Flesh 1972 UP Burke And Hare 1972 down The Asphyx 1972 down Horror Express 1972 UP Tombs Of The Blind Dead 1972 down And Now The Screaming Starts 1973 UP Captain Kronos Vampire Hunter 1973 down
It's an excellent list, but your UP/down rating method is curiously arbitrary. For instance, how does Hammer's (arguably) best Frankenstein flick "Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed" get a 'down' while the underwhelming "Vampire Circus" gets an 'UP'?
Many of these movies rate between bad and great and deserve somewhere between 5/10 - 7/10.
I recommend the 2015 film "The Witch". It's very much like this movie - same period, same themes, same understated direction, same slow build-up of tension. Not a film for everyone, but I think anyone who likes older slower-paced movies will enjoy it.
