How can someone like this movie?

It has a good beginning but becomes a little annoying as the film progresses. It makes me furious to remember I spent money on this movie.

How can you ask him to explain why he liked the film, when you never said why you disliked it?

reply

I dislike this movie for many reasons. The most prominent would be because of the horrible acting; especially from the female contributors.

reply

I like the movie cause it has John Wayne. I enjoyed the movie cause it'a a classic western with good guys and bad guys. The acting is irrevelent, its the joy you get from watching a movie. The opening scene with the guitar has no meaning to me and the movie. All movies open with music of some sort. A movie is suppose to be enjoyed, and if you are entertained, then its good. I respect your opinion, certainly some things you say are right. Me, I just enjoy it. Couid care less about character studies and who says what in what way, as in the post. Too many people get offended and have to act childish in theri replies.

I've seen a few thousand films in my 75 years. I only walked out of a theater once. - I am very forgiving of earnest young artists who attempt to tell a story. This film is an insult to Howard Hawks memory - I refuse to believe he was ever on the set in any of the scenes that were assembled into this thing. I've seen cold readings of high school student actors deliver lines with more understanding of the words. I've heard that the husband of Hedy Lamarr tried to buy up all copies of her ECSTASY film to destroy it. Fans of Wayne and Hawks should have bought up and destroyed Rio Lobo to preserve their image as decent film makers.

Two thumbs way down.

Why does he like the movie? Interestingly, you're here to talk smack about it, but haven't offered a single word as to why you thin no one should like it.

reply

I have offered reasons why I dislike this Wayne film. They just aren't in my original post.

I don't like this one for several reasons:
The acting (especially from the female stars) is pretty awful. Even if every other aspect of the film was great I'd still have a hard time watching it because of this. The story isn't entirely without merit, but it lacked for me a good flow from setup, character development, climax, and resolution. Shasta's storyline was particularly blaah. The "love connection" or lack-there-of between her and Cordona was very much not needed and added another layer of disappointment for me. Tuscarora's girlfriend was an unneccessary and annoying character. Maria, the other main lady in the bunch could've been a great character, just like Shasta, but was ruined, like Shasta, by bad acting. There are other piddly things that bothered me but this is the gist of it.

I did like Phillips (Elam) and Tuscarora (Mitchum). Also the opening scenes were great, anything during the war. Ultimately I wish they'd focused on the relationships between the guys, stayed in the Civil War longer, dropped the female characters, and developed the "bad guy" a little more.

A little note...I didn't come on here to "bash" a John Wayne movie and get people riled up. I suppose I needed to get my dissappointment validated by seeing if anyone agreed with me.

"Didn't you go to school stupid?"
-"Yep, but I came out the same way."

Great Movie !!! Great ELAM !!!

reply

Great Film. Elam stole the show with his one-liners. "If you hear a loud noise, it'll be Ketcham dyin'."

I like, "They are at another gate waiting for St Peter." ;)

Classics4Me - I'll tell you why I like it.

I was almost a teenager (11 years-old) when I saw the movie; we were in the process of moving from Kansas to Okinawa. My parents dumped me and my brother at the base theatre to watch this a (couple of times). It's not a great cinematic piece, but it is enjoyable and funny. Jack Elam is one of my favorite actors and he's the star of this movie. And Sherry Lansing's character kicks ass at the end of the movie.

To say that it romanticizes and glosses over the history of the Civil War is clearly an overstatement, but that "romantic" portrayal of the characters appealed to the idealistic girl in me, and was the basis for my majoring in history in college.

Sometimes movies are simply entertaining; this one was for me, and it still is. It also brings back memories of a wonderful time in my life. And, I love John Wayne movies, event the bad ones.

I wish I had a more sophisticated explanation for you; but, I don't. Sorry.

Terry G.

I think that's a pretty good explanation!

reply

Thanks, David. I'm watching "Big Jake" right now - love this one too.

reply

Yes. Big Jake is great. Shame about what finally happened to the dog, though.

It seems I am outnumbered here. Many of you do seem to enjoy Rio Lobo, and have intelligent reasons for liking it. I guess I just can't get past comparing it to other John Wayne movies which are so much better.

My favoriet Wayne movies include: The Cowboys, Mclintock, The Quiet Man, Angel and the Badman, Rio Bravo, and Hondo.

I also dislike; The Train Robbers, and Horse Soldiers.

its a good movie, lots of fun to watch. so what if the acting is not great, I personally enjoy it very much.

That is all

reply

Hey you took the words right out of my mouth. Rio Lobo is a lot of fun to watch and while the acting might not be the greatest, Wayne still accomplished his goal by making the cinema fun. Who cares if a movie has deep meaning and the greatest of acting when it isn't fun to watch?

reply

Hey classics4me...Mclintock and The Cowboys ...SUCK.
So much for what you think.

reply

Hi Classics,

Didn't mean to "gang up" on you. I'm watching it right now, and as I said earlier, it wasn't destined to win any awards, but it's easy to watch I certainly enjoyed the other movies you listed, in particular Rio Bravo and The Quiet Man, but I did like The Train Robbers.

So, as I tell my son, opinions vary, but I love hearing what other folks think about things. Thanks for sharing yours (and in a nice tone).

Live kindly.
Terry

well...to like this movie..you have to love America haha

reply

It's one of the few western I always liked. It's entertaining from to the first minute up to the last. It isn't a great Western like Once Upon a Time, The Searchers, Unforgiven etc... but it's a good entertaining one. One of the last classical Western. And one of the last where John Wayne is in good shape.
But ok not everyone's taste must be the same.

reply

For me personally, I enjoyed many parts of the movie. As a whole tho, it was a bit disappointing. As noted, the female leads left a lot to be desired. I would have preferred a stronger lead villain than Mike Henry. A George Kennedy, Richard Boone, Stuart Whitman, or even Jim Davis would have made a more forceful impression I think. Also, the Pierre Cardona part DEFINITELY needed a better, more recognizable actor. Old pro Jack Elam stole the film, and it was nice seeing Bill Williams again. Duke seemed a bit larger than usual here, but aquitted himself well.

I liked and bonded with the film maybe because of timing of when I first saw it; a kid in the 70's. Theres something real/nice about it, like you are watching friends that you are riding along with and maybe because its a lighter fare of a movie; fresh air in a sense compared to other westerns. Big Jake was another in this vein that I enjoyed. I loved the transistion in that story of the early 20th century meeting the old west, the weapons, cars etc.

reply

I liked it. The Duke was good here. And he smacked that chicks ass! How could you NOT like this movie!?
