Who would you cast if there was a remake today?

Who would you cast if there was a remake today? (and there really should be. it would be so successful)

I don't think it needs a remake, the 60s/70s atmosphere is great.
But to take the challenge, maybe Anne Hathaway for the girl.

reply

How about Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling. I thought they were great in The Notebook.

reply

I'm going to vomit. There are much better actors to play this role than Gosling.

reply

Anne Hathaway already made her version of "Love Story". It's called "One Day" (2011) with Jim Sturgis.

She dies at the end of that one too.

reply

Two unknowns.

reply

Well, this movie has become so endearing to so many people since 1970, its hard to duplicate it or put a new spin on it and still have similar effects on the audience.

I mean, that early 70s lingo, the way people dressed, the way Havard and Boston looked back then, its all so much part of the movie now. You can get other actors to try and fill the roles in a contemporary production of "Love Story", but I just can't see it having the same effect on me. And I only saw this movie for the first time in the mid 90s. People who saw it in the original theatrical release will probably feel stronger about this.

In fact they did try a "remake" of sorts with Oliver's Story. So, even with some of the original cast and filmed in pretty much the same era, the magic was already lost.

Anne Hathaway is indeed a beautiful young brunette actress who has similar qualities to Ali McGraw though. A good hypothetical choice.

reply

BTW, Kiera Knightley would also make a great Jennifer. As for Oliver, I can't think of another fair haired actor for the role, so I'll just go with DiCapprio for now. Perhaps if River Phoenix was still alive, he'd be a good candidate.

reply

God forbid there would be a remake, but if the HAD to be one, if I were stuck with casting it, I'd choose Ann Hathaway (because she's got the nerdy smart girl thing down) and what young actors are there today? Jonathan Rys What's-His-Name? Zach Braff?

reply

I kinda like Ethan Hawke as an actor, although I'm not sure if he's too old to play a college student now. So maybe Ethan and Ann.

reply

Ethan Hawk is almost 38, so, yeah, too old for Oliver. But I agree that Ann Hathaway's the best choice for Jennifer.

reply

I also agree that the 70s vibe is perfect.
However, if I could recast, I was also thinking Anne Hathaway. The only other actors I can think of to play Oliver are Leonardo DiCaprio or even Brad Pitt if he was younger.

Arnie Hammer is a perfect look alike for Ryan O'Neal. But I don't think this needs to be remade.

reply

I never saw Oliver's Story (probably a good thing) but I did read the book.

reply

Dominick Swain sucks. But if a good actress is required then Maggie Gyllenhaal is it and how about Jack Nicholson as the male lead?

reply

[deleted]

Face Off and I don't think Swain or any of the younger actresses are any match for Maggie Gyllenhaal. Keira Knightley is bad!!!!

reply

[deleted]

Maggie Gyllenhaal is young so she'd be better than any of those bimbos you mentioned.

reply

[deleted]

Heigl isn't bad but her acting range is limited.

reply

[deleted]

Well, you should.

reply

[deleted]

Swain? Appearance? The girl looks as plain as sand. Neither Swain nor Heigl compare to Gyllenhaal where acting is concerned. Plus, Maggie Gyllenhaal is hot!

reply

[deleted]

No, it's a fact.

reply

i've got a new actor for oliver: tom hardy. he's got the looks and the acting.

reply

Who's Tom Hardy?

reply

[deleted]

I think Rachel Bilson would make a great Jenny, I'm not sure who should play Oliver...
someone not too well-known and not too pretty boy like Zac Efron (definetely a no)

reply

I totally agree--Keira Knightley is one of the worst actresses I've ever seen, just awful. Maggie Gyllenhaal is awesome.

reply

what about ellen page from Juno... she's young and pretty.
Although, I think Anne Hathaway would be a good choice.
I don't know who would play the male lead though.

reply

rachel bilson and jason lewis

reply

How about Mandy Moore?

In fact A Walk To Remember was more or less a remake of this movie anyway...

reply

A "remake" of this movie is simply impossible. There's so much about it beyond the story itself - the classic 1970 New York atmosphere is so well-documented. Too much has changed since then to capture that feeling again. Leave it alone.

reply

How about Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens? They have amazing chemistry!! And are definitely the right age to play college students so it's convincing! Plus they're HUGE right now so would definitely sell the movie.

reply

OH MY GOD!!! I can NOT believe someone just said Zac Eron and Vanessa Hudgens. You know, people are talking about actors around here.

As for the post's question I would say Kate Winslet (a little old I know but she would do a great Jennifer) and Robert Downey Jr. or Daniel Day-Lewis...day dreaming I know but young actors today aren't nearly as good enough to star in a remake of this movie.

reply

I would go with Anne Hathaway and possibly Eddie Redmayne. I know that's really random but they're the same age and both good actors. It'd be interesting to see them working together.

Why are you like that?
Like what?
Like how you are.

reply

Jessica Stroup and i don't know. Maybe Shane West.

reply

Amber Tamblyn has the spirit to play Jenny and Dominic Cooper is cute enough to play Oliver.

reply

ooh i approve of this.

if not, there's also mia wasikowska (she can pull off the personality) and camilla belle (she looks the part the most).

as for the guy, if not redmayne, i'd pick anton yelchin. gregory smith could also be good.

A would recommend Mandy Moore for the female lead, but she already did a similiar role in "A Walk to Remember".

reply

Darn it. I wanted to be the first to suggest Mandy Moore. I just looked at the previous postings, and saw that somebody had already suggested Mandy Moore. I guess we were both thinking the same thing. Oh well...hard for me to think of a sweeter, more angelic face to play Jenny than Mandy.

reply

Ellen Page and Tom Sturridge. I think Ellen can play that nerdy, cool girl (but I doubt she'd do it at risk of being stereotyped) and Tom is gorgeous and I'm sure can pull it off, he's also relatively unknown, which is always good, giving someone their big break.
Otherwise, Anne Hathaway, would be good. I love Keira but I don't think she'd be right for this part.

JASPER HALE <3 There's nothing like a bit of southern comfort . . . ;)

reply

Anne Hathaway and Patrick Wilson or Jim Sturgess
