Where would they have gone with their pot of gold?

I have always wondered about that. It would have been nigh on impossible to smuggle it on any ship

I wondered about this myself. Switzerland would not have been a good option, as soldiers in uniform found on their soil were interred til the end of the war. Had they somehow changed into civilian clothes, they might've been shot as spies/infiltrators by the border patrol. Switzerland was very edgy and protective of its borders being aware of the planned Operation Tannenbaum to invade. Any gold bearing the swastika & eagle stamp would surely be confiscated. At any rate the trucks carrying the gold are seen heading West (we see a glorious sunset), all but proving they were going back to France not Switzerland. If they headed back to the farmhouse they were at in the beginning, there'd be no way to get the gold out - at this point a couple 100 men were aware of the heist, no way it could've remained a secret from their officers. I know it's just a movie [strangely based on a true story that happened at the very end of the war], but there seems to be no logical way they could keep either the gold or the cash they'd get for it - it or the cash would be confiscated once they got back to their units. Crapgame's connection Izzy whom he gets the gold quote from ain't in Paris either - Crapgame gets him on a cranked field phone whose range is limited. Izzy must be close by. It was a gr8 movie, but needed to allude to a way to hide or redeem the gold, & provide a way for it or the $$$ to be accesible to the men after the war.

I suspect Crapgame would have some contacts to help them get the gold back to the US.

I think they went to Paris, not Switzerland...in the movie's closing shot, they're literally 'riding into the sunset' heading west, away from Switzerland.

anyone mentioned the german tank crew and their cut of the gold ?

what would they do , they have no tank left and there are harsh Feldjandarmerie (german MP) checkpoints to capture retreating soldiers and deserters

IMO they made a run for swissland and wait the war out cos being on the losing side of the war means they very likely wouldn't survive to spend their gold

reply

Clearly, they trade the gold for very rare and valuable stamps.

hide / bury it and come back for the gold when the war is over?

alternative: bribe your way into Switzerland
