Scene that made you laugh the hardest

There are so many to choose from, but I have two:

When Woody goes to the blackmailer's house for dinner and he tries to "stab" her with the turkey drumstick

The old guy being interviewed about Woody's character, who keeps veering off-topic, forcing the off-camera director to keep yelling "could you get to the point!"

reply

The interview with Kay Lewis (Louise Lasser) about Virgil was pretty funny, when she says things such as (paraphrasing):

"I can't believe it, that this idiot was a criminal. You never met anybody like this in your whole life. You never met such a nothing. It's hard to believe there was a mind working in there that knew how to rob banks."

Also, the marching band scenes, with Virgil trying to sit down and play the cello, and Virgil and his wife arguing about what he should wear to the robbery.

reply

While Virgil and Louise talk in the prison visitor's room, in the background we can see a visitor with a ventriloquist's dummy talking with a prisoner with his own ventriloquist's dummy.

reply

When Virgil tried to rob the pet store and gets chased out by the fake gorrilla.

And little Virgil getting chased by the cop with his hand stuck in the candy machine.

reply

Gub or gun - his bad handwriting on the robbery note and
the chain gang - the old lady says something like, "Didn't you notice how they all walked like this? They're chained together" and the cop says, "I just thought they were a close family."

reply

Yeah, for me it was the bank robbery scene too - when the clerk says he has to get the note initialled by the chief cashier. "It's our policy sir".

reply

Yeah, that was original.

"Gub"

reply

when the side affect was that he turned into a rabii

reply

"These are my cousins. They're visiting for the holidays."

"What holiday?"

"Have you ever heard of St. Abernathy's Day? That's why we're here."

reply

when he is shining the guys shoes, and spits on his leg

and when he his trying to keep up with the marching band on his chello

reply

And "I just thought they were a close family."

reply

when woody cuts the perfect circle of glass...and walks away with it

reply

Holy sh-t. That was pure gold. I didn't see that coming at all... I thought the joke would be about how idiotic it was of him to be attempting to steal in broad daylight (the reflections of confused spectators is visible on the glass, too). But nope. He really just did want the glass.

Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.

reply

How about when Virgil tries to lie his way into a job and the interviewer asked him if he's ever used a high-speed digital computer?...He says "yes"..the interviewer says "where?"...Virgil answers "My aunt has one." (Keep in mind this film was done in 1969) I also love the scene where he's chasing the lady around her apartment in a car!...lol, classic off-the-wall stuff!...Totally entertaining film....it's funny from start to finish.

reply

I wonder if viewers even get all the 'whats my line' jokes in that bit.the interviewer asks what kind of office(that virgil worked in)he answers a rectangular one!!!!If I ever get stuck in an interview thats going nowhere I have to use that one!!

reply

The foamy soap gun!

reply

Too many to choose from, but out of those not already mentioned, I liked the bit with the shirt-folding machine in the prison laundry.

reply

the camera in the loaf of bread!!!

reply

got to give it to the cello in the marching band

Badges? We don't need no stinking badges!

reply

Lots of funny scenes, but the one that makes me laugh the hardest is the interview with Stanley Krim (Cretin), who's supposed to talk about taking the films of Virgil's arrest and goes off on tangents about his laundry and breakfast. I recently ordered the movie mainly to see that bit again. It's so pointless and yet so funny!

reply

I love the scene where he is going to rob the jewlery. He starts cutting out the glass , takes the glass out of the window, looks around, and runs off with the glass. FUNNY STUFF!

interview with the teacher, thats funny. "He returned the pen, but took the opportunity to feel all the girls"

and the parents in disguises, wow, this is a classic.

reply

How about when Woody is about to rob a pet store and gets chased out by a Gorilla.

reply

Cello player in a marching band. Very funny!

reply

- When Virgil tries to run the blackmailer over with his car...in her house!

- Some of the prisoners had planned to break out, but changed their minds. No one told Virgil and he was the only one out.

- The ending. ("Do you know if it's raining?")

reply

Narrator: Food on a chain gang is scarce and not very nourishing. The men get one hot meal a day: a bowl of steam.

That one had me cracking up for hours.

reply

I STILL laugh out loud whenever I remember that bit of narration, I'm laughing right now.

Another scene...When Virgil is looking for his light blue shirt on the day of the robbery but its in the laundry and his wife suggest the beige one....." I can't wear beige to a robbery"..."Well why don't you call up the other guys and see what they're wearing"...etc.

reply

When Virgil tries to run the blackmailer over with his car...in her house!

That affected me deeply, seeing the film as a youth.

reply

The shirt-folding scene is the one I laughed at the most but those listed are all good.

Life is a state of mind.

As a kid, and even now. The scene in the beginning when the narrator is talking about Virgils cello playing. Then you see an outside view of the house as you listen to awful cello playing, and then suddenly the cello fly's through the window and crashes to the ground. I just pictured little Virgil throwing a tantrum about how much he sucks.
