why the overblown musical numbers

I really liked this movie, and the songs were pretty good; however, I was annoyed when the artful dodger sang "Consider Yourself" it suddenly turned into a huge production with dancing butchers and scullery maids and who-knows-what who had nothing to do with the two boys. This happened again in "Who Will Buy This Wonderful Morning". Couldn't they have just done the song and leave it at that? Is this how it is in the stage play?
Otherwise, a pretty good movie!

"What do you want me to do, draw a picture? Spell it out!"

i love Consider Yourself. the scenes of street life are great fun. Who will Buy is good too. I don't really see it as any more unrealistic than any other musical. nobody in real life goes around singing and dancing like that.

I enjoy watching Oliver!

“Who Will Buy?” happens to take place at the only time In his life when Oliver knows happiness. Maybe Carol Reed and Ossie Morris wanted this number to be the one segment of the film that should be both exuberant and shot in glorious colour.

Then they had very poor judgment, because there are WAY more exuberant scenes in this musical embarrassment than just “Who Will Buy.”
