DVD Edition PLEASE!!!!

This film is currently unavailable in the UK and only available on VHS in America. As the only movie featuring Formula 1 racing surely it is time to release it on DVD as it remains a cult among F1 afficianados. A few given away as prizes on ITV on race day and this will become a monster re-release

I whole heartedly agree. My all-time favorite movie, I was fortunate enough to watch this movie when it was released at the Cinerama Doom in Hollywood, and what an experience it was. 3 screens meshed into 1 huge viewing area that just swallowed you up and put you in the movie. This movie begs to be released on DVD format for the world to enjoy again. I will be first in line to pre-order when I get the word. Let's get it done !!

I don't know what MGM is waiting for; they've released many less-worthy films on DVD in the last year. A wide-screen remastered DVD will be utterly spectacular! (What's more, it will take up 1/4 the shelf space as the VHS version!) We have LeMans, we have Rendezvous, now we need Grand Prix!

reply

Just a thought. Purely as an academic exercise you understand. Transferring VHS videos at home to DVD is not that difficult.

reply

You could transfer the VHS, but what would be the point? This film deserves to be remastered, set in widescreen format (the pan and scan in the video is awful, unless there is a letterbox version I am unaware of). Besides, a DVD is more than simply the format. It is also the extras, which should be many in this version. I just hope they do a better job than was the case with LeMans. No extras at all.

reply

I agree gkar....
Although I do have the equipment to transfer the tape to DVD, I've just been hoping to get a remaster, with extras.

BTW, the VHS version I have is true letterbox and actually is quite good.

Dang, I love this movie.

I absolutely agree. I saw it in its original release. I have the Widescreen VHS and have watched it many times. It is an absolute must in DVD with a fantastic music score. Maurice Jarre hit his mark with this film.

KC1959,

I too want a DVD version released! However I'm so keen on getting a copy anyway I will probably get a VHS version. I have read that the Pan and scan on VHS kills the enjoyment somewhat. WHat is this widescreen version? Does this remove the Pan and Scan treatement of the original scenes?

I'm in Australia so I guess I'm interested in any info that can lead me to finding a source for this version like product code, supplier etc.

Regards

Keith

Does anybody out there know anyone who could push the right button to get this film released on DVD - now!?
I saw the movie in the cinema several times in 1966-67 and have never forgotten it.
Just yesterday (when I was back from the GP in Monaco!) it was shown on the French-German TV channel "arte". And I found it even better than I remembered.
So please, gentlemen - let's get that DVD version now!

I can't believe that a dvd version of this movie dosn't exist!! There has to enough demand out there for it to be released in dvd. After all, I found Killer Clowns From Outer Space on dvd, why not what is probably one of the top 3 or 4 racing movies ever made?! I will never forget seeing it in cinerama when first released in 1966 and is absolutly nessasary for any collection.

I just saw this sort-a petition on amazon.com

Availability: NOT YET RELEASED: The studio is currently not producing this title on DVD, but to be notified when it is available, enter your e-mail address at right. You'll also be voting for this release; we'll let the studio know how many customers are waiting for this title.

Well, I've signed up for it, after all amazon must by now have some influences over at Hollywood road!

reply

Isn't it quite absurde that there is a behind-the-scenes DVD released, but not the actual movie?

Based on the reviews, it doesn't seem to be particularly good either. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it wiser to release the actual film and only put the documentary as bonus material on that DVD?

reply

You'd think that'd be the way to do it. I agree.
I remember seeing this in the theaters several times in '66. This film, and "LeMans" 5 years later, basically hooked me on motorsports. The opening scenes at Monaco, along with the great views of competition on the old high banks at Monza, are some of the best cinematography ever done. The sights, sounds and music even make up for the lousy, soap-opera driven script. Include me in as far as standing in line for a Wide Screen DVD copy of this film.

I bought the Behind the scenes "making of Grand prix"

It was cheap $6.00 and not even worth that !!!!!!!!

It had 10 minutes of Grand Prix and then 40 minutes of car crashes from 1906

I have Grand Prix on Laser Disc and VHS and plan to do a personal backup to DVD from the LaserDisc

At nearly 3 hours it is very difficult (impossible) to encode the split screens and action of Grand Prix in to a DVD designed for 120 to 160 minutes

reply

split the movie over two discs to keep the quality high, i say. given that you'll have at least two side breaks on the laserdisc anyway, it's still an improvement.

Yes, I wholeheartedly agree that Frankenheimer's Grand Prix be released in the United Kingdom. From my delvings at various DVD retailers around London there is no word on any release date. Very disheartening! I am an avid fan of Formula 1 and the early sequences of racing in this film are fascinating.

Let's hope someone gets the bright idea to release this wonderful film.

reply

I second that! LeMans is a good racing film, but "GP" is one of the best there is IMO.

In the meantime I guess I'll have to dust off my PC-racing wheel and reinstall Grand Prix Legends...:)
