i'm sorry but if this really was such an important show then why 2 seaso

ns? it was only on for a measly 2 seasons. I mean, we don't talk about and no other show that is a famous show only was on for 2 seasons. I think this is so wrong. even star trek which people talk about how short an amount of time it was on for was on for 3 seasons.

I am really puzzled right now as far as why this show is famous and why people always fondly remember it and why it's such an important show or an important show.

The use of music and music videos made the show groundbreaking. Many shows that lasted only a few years have remained popular with new audiences as the years go on. Besides the show, the band had records that sold by the millions and hits on the radio. So, the show was bigger than the show. Like Batman or Spider-Man, the comic books and cartoons feed into the popularity.
And, for the record, it was the actors who ended the show. They were board doing the same plots each week. So, it's not like it was a weak series that hung around for 50 years.

what do you mean the show was bigger than the show? and just because for some reason tv decided to show it countless times in reruns doesn't make it a great show, so the question and mystery still remains why has this show endured and been so beloved and cherished and been somehow anointed as one the best shows ever made which is what tv is saying it is since they have always played it so much over 50 years since it started?

not true, there haven't been many shows that lasted only 2 years that have remained popular with new audiences because that would mean that it is a bad show or at best a good show. also if it's only on for two years there is not enough episodes of the show to get a lot of people to love it.

everything outside of this show doesn't have anything to do with this show. this is about this show. 2 years is an incomplete show. sure a show can be popular with audiences but that doesn't make it a great or important or classic show.

Your logic is faulty.
You say just because a show is repeated many times it is not great, but that the Monkees is considered great because it has been repeated so often. Explain that.

On your second point, few shows that are canceled after two years are syndicated, so there could be shows out there that just couldn't find an audience at the time, that could be popular now. Many shows are canceled for reasons other than popularity.

Third point, Yes. if people like the music or the actors or the special effects, the show could be of interest to viewers. Many people tune in to bad shows and bad movies just because they like the actors. the Monkees having records out and concert tours creates a frenzy that keeps fans interested, and draws in new fans.

Now, I don't mean to be sarcastic, but what is your point? Are you asking why do people like the show 50 years after it first aired, or are you asking from a critics point of view? What makes this show better than other shows from its era?
Other than an Emmy or two, and fans who enjoy a laugh an some nostalgia, no one said the show was one of the best ever.

Also, consider the Munsters and Adams' Family. Both lasted just two years and remained popular for decades. I mentions the Honeymooners in the other post.

reply

if you know that my logic is faulty then you can't ask me to explain what I meant because that would mean that you don't understand what I meant and know that my logic is faulty.

my point is that the monkees is not a great show just on the fact that it's been shown in reruns endless times over 50 years. that quality of a show doesn't make a show great. what makes a show great to everyone, like critics and audiences is if it's on for at least 3 years. now, there are great shows that were on for only 1 season like the ben stiller show on Fox but was the monkees really a great show? I mean it was so silly and immature, it was a kids show right but with adults? and just because a show is considered great by audiences doesn't mean it's a great show critically, survivor anyone? or dancing with the stars?

what did you mean by this?: few shows that are canceled after two years are syndicated, so there could be shows out there that just couldn't find an audience at the time, that could be popular now. what are you saying? if few shows that are canceled after two years are syndicated, then how could it make sense to say that there could be shows out there that just couldn't find an audience at the time, that could be popular now? those are opposite points.

no, I'm not asking why people like the show 50 years after it first aired, though it does seem odd to me how a show that only aired for 2 years could have become so popular. I'm asking from a critics point of view why on earth could a show that only was on for 2 years be considered by most people as a great show?

ok, ok, the munsters and the addams family have had a great and legendary and lasting legend as have the honeymooners but they are the exception to this rule. so, it's not to say it can't happen that a show only on for 2 or less seasons is a legendary and classic show but just that it extremely rarely happens.

reply

You seem to be saying that a show that only lasts two years can't be good. It's important to note that the show went off the air because the stars and producers wanted to change the format and the network wouldn't let them. It wasn't bad ratings or lack of viewers.
The Monkees was an innovative show. It used music videos, had a rebellious attitude, and a timeless humor. The show appealed to young viewers. When those viewers see it now, it probably reminds them of their carefree youth. It won and Emmy or two, but I don't think anyone has ever listed it as one of the greatest shows ever.

reply

but with all the positive things you said about it you are implying that it's one of the greatest shows ever.

no, I'm saying that a show only on for 2 years can't be technically or critically one of the best shows of all time.

what do you mean by timeless humor?

no, I'm saying that a show only on for 2 years can't be technically or critically one of the best shows of all time.

Freaks and Geeks was on for just one season and people(STILL to this day) cream over that like it's the Citizen Kane of dramedies or something.

When there's no more room in Hollywood, remakes shall walk the Earth.

reply

Then there are shows that stay on for years and far too long that gets watered down, stale and overrated. I can think of a current show that still airs which really should've been gone many years ago.

The Simpsons?

60 Minutes?

Great response, revolver95.
Also- I don't know why people bother asking questions when they clearly don't care to know the answer.

reply

The Monkees was shown in the UK on early morning kids TV in the 80's.

reply

I don't see why there's anything to be sorry for.

Better that 1.

NBC wanted to give them a Season 3 (1968-69), but the boys (esp. Mike and Peter) wanted to get away from the silly stop-action, goofiness of the first two seasons. They suggested a variety-type show. NBC said no. Tork quit shortly afterwards, anyways. I Dream of Jeannie took over their Monday night time slot.

reply

Why does it matter what show took over their time slot?

reply

I disagree with your premise. Many iconic shows had short runs: Star Trek, The Munsters and The Addams Family are just some of the examples that only lasted 2 or 3 seasons.

TV shows are canceled for many reasons. Often because their ratings are low. Many of these become far more popular and esteemed after the fact. Sometimes a studio exec doesn't like it for some reason that has nothing to do with its quality. Sometimes a network decides they are going completely change their direction. The great kill off that claimed the Beverly Hillbillies and Green Acres are examples of the latter.

reply

Completely agree. some people don't realize how hard it is to keep a show running and some shows with certain 1 trick pony plots can only go on so long without a serious change or rebranding. The Monkees was that kind of show. I loved them, at 38 they are still my favorite band and show. But you can only do the type of plots the Monkees did for so long before it gets old. And the guys themselves felt it was old. I think it's the same way as Batman 1966. LOVED that show but hated the 3rd season. I hated Batgirl and the plots got so bad that, to me, it would have been better to also keep them at 2 seasons. I am glad the Monkees quit while they were ahead and the show stays memorable and fun all the same.

reply

Because its sheer genius wasn't appreciated in its time.

reply

At the time it was just a very silly sitcom. In retrospect its presentation of music was an important step in the development of music videos.

reply

Because if they had made more seasons, the Earth would have overdosed on awesomenessery and Davy Jones would have been made ruler of the planet and 1000 years of darkness would have reigned.

reply

….um....

I would tolerate 1000 years of darkness if it meant Davy Jones was the supreme ruler.....

just sayin'... ;)

Fair enough. He is pretty dreamy and has a voice of pure honey. And I'm a straight male saying that.

Twin Peaks was only one for two seasons, and only one of them was good. It's what you do in that one or two seasons that counts in the end.
