Visited Salzburg

We walked into the actual church Maria and The Captain were married in…it was where the children talked to the nuns thru the gate when wanting to see Maria. They were married in a modest church, not a grand cathedral shown in the movie.
Beautiful area to visit,

That's cool. Didn't head up to the mountains?

reply

If you mean the escape, then no. The von Trapps actually just boarded a train and left Austria with no interference. The mountain crossing was so much more eventful, even if not true.

reply

Well, the escape is one thing, but I also meant the opening where Julie Andrews sings: "The hills are alive..."

Ah, I read that about the von Trapp's leaving after the wedding through the mountains, not the OP's checking the mountains on his tour of Salzburg. Got it.

Supposedly, the mountain shots were on location so that would be cool to visit that as well.

reply

Yeah, would be wonderful. Saw the film for the first time recently and quite enjoyed this classic.

My Fair Lady is next. I was never a big musical person, but I wonder if that is in the same league.

I think The Sound of Music is one of the greatest movies ever filmed from a story, cinematography, and music standpoint. Any musical will be a tough act to follow. Heck, any movie would be a tough act to follow musical or not. It also gets better with repeated viewings. My wife and I watched it last Friday night and really enjoyed it.

Now, My Fair Lady is a great musical as well. It's longish but it's still one of my favorite movies - top 100 for sure.

reply

Yeah, no doubt a great film.

Top 100, that's all I needed to know. Thanks.

They moved to Vermont and opened a hotel that still stands today (rebuilt twice after fires) and is run by a couple of the grandchildren, in Stowe. Trapp Family Lodge.

reply

That's cool, though not quite right.

The wedding took place in St Michael's Basilica in Mondsee Abbey: https://goo.gl/maps/puE6iKNRmWY2qEi77

The children talked to the nuns at Nonnberg Abbey, some 30km away: https://goo.gl/maps/s2WMc9cvQgcMzoPu8

Interesting. Thanks for the links.

According to Edelweiss Patterns Blog website, she was married at Nonnberg Abbey, not the cathedral.

reply

Thank you, yes, you're right: the real wedding of Georg von Trapp and Maria Kutschera took place in Nonnberg Abbey. The movie wedding was shot in St Michael's Basilica.

Lucky you.

We just took a family trip to Austria last month,
Saw the abbey, all the locations around Salzburg, the Gazebo, and of course the hill from Doe a Deer.

It's a beautiful country.

Visiting Salzburg & doing the TSOM tour is great fun. Besides seeing the abbey and the main square (with the horse statue fountain), I loved standing at the sites of the Mirabell Palace where they filmed parts of Do A Deer, and walking along the path by the yellow wall where Julie Andrews sings I've Got Confidence. That was about 50 years after I fell in love with TSOM when seeing it as a kid in 1965!

reply

Same here. There is a bike tour that rents bikes and a headset, and takes you to all the major sites.
