I didn't read all the other posts, but one that comes to mind is "Something Wild" with Carroll Baker and Ralph Meeker. He prevents her suicide, takes her to his pad and in effect has kidnapped her because he won't let her go. And it isn't only to prevent another suicide attempt, as you'll see. His drives are lustful, needy yet in his way romantic. Secondly, there are two plays with the same theme--Murray Schisgal's "The Tiger" and Terrence McNally's "Sweet Eros." In both the male abductor carries a gagged girl into his place and ties her to a chair. "The Tiger" became the movie "The Tiger Makes Out" with Eli Wallach and Anne Jackson.

Some excellent recommendations here. I'm surprised no one has mentioned "Peeping Tom," a film from about the same period (1960) that was well ahead of his time – about a voyeur with a camera:

Hard to believe no one's mentioned "Baby Jane." Now if only I could get "I've Written a Letter to Daddy" out of my head ...

I saw a film not too long ago about a blind sculpter and his mother. They kidnap a young girl and she believes it's only the fellow who's in on it but later realizes that his mother is also a part of it. This young man has never touched a real female before. He wants to sculpt her so he needs to use his hands to feel her skin and bones. It's an Asian picture. It turns really creepy. Like the woman he kidnaps either falls for him or pretends to.. It's violent or something. I was half asleep.

I've written a letter to Daddy
His address is Heaven above
I've written
Dear Daddy we miss you and wish you were here ummmm ...

I forget the rest!

That plot sounds vaguely familiar, but I can't place the name of the film. Asian horror is a cut above what Americans are doing these days, so to speak. The plot sounds a bit like Curtis Harrington's "The Killing Kind," with John Savage as a mama's boy on a killing spree and Ann Southern as his domineering mother, who of course calls all the shots, or rather strangulations. Mama knows best!

Think you may be talking about the movie Blind Beast that is mentioned in an above post on this thread.

Yes, "Blind Beast." I should have read to the beginning of this thread. Thanks!

Tallulah Bankhead and Stefanie Powers. Probably bad today but I recall enjoying it on television when I was a lad.

Another movie that has come to mind, which may not be entirely in the same genre as "The Collector"..

Clint Eastwood's "Play Misty For Me" (1971):
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067588/

I heard of a movie called "Homecoming" (2009) with Mischa Barton: I've yet to see it.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1135500/

Today, I finally saw Jenna Elfman's "Obsession" (2002):
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0325322/

There is a French version of "Obsessed" called "He Loves Me...He Loves Me Not" (2002): I'm going to see this when I find it.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0291579/

*I'm not sure which one came first, but the Jenna Elfman version is supposely based on the true story of Diane Schafer who stalked a doctor for 8/9 years.

Here are a few others that were made for tv with obsession themes:

"Bad Ronald" (1974): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071186/ (Seen bits a pieces on Youtube.)
"The Penthouse" (1989): http://former.imdb.com/title/tt0098075/
*"The Aduction of Kari Swenson" (1987): http://former.imdb.com/title/tt0092506/
"Lisa" (1990):http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100031/
*"A Cry In the Wild: The Taking of Peggy Ann" (1991): http://former.imdb.com/title/tt0099328/
"Deadbolt" (1992): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106683/
"Stalked" (1994): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111276/ (Never seen it.)

*Based on true stories.

I recently saw "Puppy", "P2", & "Something Wild". "Bad Ronald", "Something Wild" & "Lisa" can be found on youtube.

Sleepy Angel, they are not in the same genre, but they do deal with obsession, so I quite like your choices.

"Play Misty For Me" is one of my favourite Clint Eastwood films. ;)

And "He Loves Me...He Loves Me Not" I just loved. It is flawed, but I loved it.
(BTW, I'd love to hear your opinion, once you've seen it.)

From among other quality films that deal with "obsession" on some level, I remember (in no particular order) "The Umbrella Woman" (1987), with Rachel Ward, Bryan Brown and Sam Neill; the very interesting "Noce Blanche" (1989, with Vanessa Paradis); "Une femme francaise" (1995, with Emanuelle Beart and Daniel Auteuil); and of course - the great "Adele H" (1975 with Isabelle Adjani), an unforgettable story and film. (Adjani's "Camille Claudel" is also absolutely worth seeing!)

BLUEGREEN "Play Misty For Me" is one of my favorite Clint Eastwood movies, too. I also love "Two Mules For Sister Sarah". I just received "The Beguiled" in the mail. I can't wait to see it. I saw it years ago on cable, I hope it's as good as I remember.

I'll have to check into your recommendations when I get the chance. I haven't had the chance to see "He Loves Me... He Loves Me Not". I was home sick from work in the earlier part of the week, too bad I recovered before I got to see it.

Funny you should mention sickness in the same sentence with this film...

Like I said, I'd like to hear your opinion after you've seen it.

Oh, and how could I forget Truffaut's "The Woman Next Door" (1981, I think, with Fanny Ardant) I'll never know!
Still, if you like this sort of film, I think you should absolutely not miss "Adele H".

Obsession can be fun to watch, doesn't it? :-)

Thanks, Wilde_child! After reading the plot summary for Eyes of Laura Mars I realized it was a movie I saw on t.v. as a kid. I couldn't remember who was in it, so I couldn't have found the title without you. Thank you!

Mumsy, Nanny, Sonny and Girly 1970

Sexy, teenaged, immature Girly and her camera-wielding brother Sonny bring home unsuspecting men to Mumsy and Nanny, where they play games, and if they don't follow the rules, they're sent to the angels. One day they bring home a New Friend who has a few ideas for games of his own, though, and he begins to turn the foursome against each other.

"Lolita", somewhat:

"Lolita and Humbert drive around the country, moving from state to state and motel to motel. In order to keep Lolita from going to the police, Humbert tells her if he is arrested, she will become a ward of the state and lose all her clothes and belongings. He also bribes her for sexual favours, though he knows that she does not reciprocate his love and shares none of his interests. After a year touring North America, the two settle down in another New England town, where Lolita is enrolled in a girls school. Humbert becomes very possessive and strict, forbidding Lolita to take part in after-school activities or to associate with boys. However, most of the townspeople see this as the action of a loving and concerned, though old-fashioned, parent."

"The Skin I Live In", starring Antonio Banderas, has the twisted vibe, with revenge tossed in.

"The Disappearance of Alice Creed" ~ It has some twists and turns, not exactly in the category of "The Collector" (which I'm watching again right now on TCM).

"The Touchables" (1968) ~ IMDb review: Long ago in the swingin', free-love Sixties, before the onset of interpretive sexual harassment, you could abduct your favorite pop idol, strip him nearly naked, tie him to a rotating table under a transparent dome, and force yourself upon him, and lo and behold: HE LOVES IT!!! (reversing genders in a far-less-grim tone)

I'm pleased to see "Tattoo" mentioned, as I found it a fascinating film. I wish it would be shown on Starz or Encore, which sometimes come up with on-the-edge films. Will TCM ever dare show it?

Many TV movies have this theme, too, some of them based on real-life incidents even if only slightly, including: Abducted: Fugitive for Love, Rearview Mirror (1984), Stolen Innocence (1995), Easy Prey (1986), and Taken in Broad Daylight (2009).

EDIT: I suppose "Black Snake Moan" might be worth checking out. As far as I recall, it's similar to "The Keeper" and "Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!", as the intent seems to be "It's for your own good". (just in case...)

*** The trouble with reality is there is no background music. ***

Lightning by Dean Koontz may also be of a interest to some of you. I read the book after I saw it recommended on another board.
