"Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!" (1990) directed by Pedro Almodovar, which introduced U.S. audiences to Antonio Banderas, comes to mind.

The Grissom Gang has a related theme, but not quite like The Collector

"The Keeper'(2004) w/Dennis Hopper was pretty good.

"The Phantom of the Opera" and "V for Vendetta" (although the last is a comic book with its film version) are similar in some ways (the guys are crazy and they kidnap the girl, but they´re nice and sweet, too, if it makes some sense ^^U).

Well, there is a recent real story which is VERY VERY similar to The Collector. I´m talking about Natascha Kampusch´s kidnapping, but there isn´t any book nor film based in it... yet (I heard something about a british book about this girl, but I also heard it was illegal or something like that O_o).

Oh, and sorry for my bad grammar ^^U

P.D: "Labyrinth" with David Bowie could be considered, too, but it´s more about a girl growing up.

Not sure I should mention these first two.. they are hard to find....

"Sweet Hostage" 1975 - A made for t.v. movie with Linda Blair and Martin Sheen. Unfortunely, it's not available on dvd yet.

http://imdb.com/title/tt0073772/

"The Trap" 1966 - Saw this on A&E many years ago, and loved it. Not sure if it's available on DVD.

http://imdb.com/title/tt0061115/

"Perfect Strangers" 2003 - Sam Neill

http://imdb.com/title/tt0325968/

"The Piano" 1993 - Not sure if this fits the bill, but you may like it.

http://imdb.com/title/tt0107822/

"Atame" or "Tie Me Up/ Tie Me Down" 1990 - Is a good one, too, as someone else mentioned.

Misery with Kathy Bates and James Cann is definitly one, albiet the gender roles are reversed. If you want a comedic version there's Situation Hopeless but not Serious with Alec Guiness and Robert Redford.

"Misery"? *Slaps self on the forehead* COCKADOODIE! I can't believe I forgot about Annie Wilkes? Thanks, Actor 19!

Masamura's excellent film Blind Beast http://imdb.com/title/tt0140384/ must have been inspired by the John Fowles novel this film was based on. It has a much darker tone to it though and heads in an alltogether different direction toward the end of the film but it is in my opinion and much better film than this one.

A another movie with a slightly related theme...

TATTOO (1982)

Bruce Dern plays a tattoo artist who becomes obsessed with model Maud Adams. The movie starts out like a standard relationship story. Then he chloroform her and takes her to an isolated beach house to serve as his living canvas.

p2 definatly. it takes place in a parking garage *naturally* And it's only about one night *christmas eve*. the main character is crazy and hot, which i think makes a good story :). It's a lot darker than the collector but it's insanely similar. tom (wes Bentley) kidnaps angela (rachel nichols) because he likes her and wants to get to know her. It was very well made too.

After I got to Sin City, all the color came back.

Misery, as others have said -- but definitely read the book -- even though the movie is great, the book is just amazing.
American Psycho -- has a bit of this sort of thing, although I wouldn't really call Patrick Bateman "sweet". wonderful portrayal of a psychopath though.
Intensity, by Dean Koontz (kidnapping theme, but again not a sweet psycho).
Captivity -- similar theme, though it sucks.
The Girl Next Door (based on the Ketchum book).
Freeway, with Reese Witherspoon
Boxing Helena

There is a movie starring Sara Venable and Douglas Travis called "TWO" (AKA "CAPTIVE"). It's very simulair. A Viet Nam vet, Travis, kidnaps a woman, Sara Venable. According to IMDB it has not been relased on VHS, but I saw it many years ago after renting the video, and I purchased the stores copy when it closed down. It's been a long time, and somehow I have lost the tape.

There is also a Spanish language movie "EL SECUESTRO" just like "The Collector". As far as I have been able to figure out, it hasn't been relased on VHS or DVD.

Although it still hasn't been released to DVD and is hard to find on VHS, someone has been kind enough to upload Sweet Hostage with Linda Blair and Martin Sheen on youtube. Thank you, thefallingtear!

Till Human Voices Wake Us (2002): May not fit the bill, but I liked it.

No, no, no, and no.
SECRETARY is in no way like THE COLLECTOR or SWEET HOSTAGE.
