Best western comedy?

i think this movie is terribly underrated on here (should be at least 8.0). or is there a better western comedy? i can't think of any. the only comedy movie i can think of which is up to par with Cat Ballou is One, Two, Three by Billy Wilder (IMO his best comedy).

There are two other good comedy westerns that I would rate up there with Cat Ballou. They are: "Support Your Local Sheriff" and "Support Your Local Gunfighter" starring James Garner.

Most people (I included) would also nominate "Blazing Saddles", but I have to agree that the two "Support ..." movies are marvelous and not that well known among casual moviegoers.

"Cat Ballou", however, has both the fall-out-of-your-chair laughs of Blazing Saddles and the story integrity and comedic grace of the "Support.." films. It gets my vote for the all time best.

reply

As much as I love Blazing Saddles, it has a great deal of toilte humor, which can be offensive to some folks. Cat Ballou is more of a pure comedy with no gross out humor.

reply

Personally, Cat Ballou is definitely my favorite comedy and possibly my favorite movie. (Its competitors? On Golden Pond and The Whales of August, and possibly the Australian miniseries Brides of Christ.)

But I wouldn't quarrel at all with someone who put Young Frankenstein Number One, and there are probably a few others.

I agree with all the ones mentioned... but I can't believe in the category of western comedy and none of you mentioned "The Villain"!!!

Nobody mentioned "Evil Roy Slade" with John Astin, hilarious!

I agree with you Evil Roy Slade is sadly negelected and deserves to be up there and remembered with the best comedy westerns as the others mentioned. I have only seen it once (as a kid) but it has always stuck with me. Carry on Cowboy isn't bad either with some great lines.

1)Cat Ballou Ballou wins because of Lee Marvins performance.
2)Blazing Saddles
3)Support Your Local Gunfighter
4)Big Hand For the Little Lady

Cat Ballou is the best. Blazing Saddles is #2. Love the Support movies. But, no one has mentioned Paint Your Wagon! It is a hilarious movie. Some of the best lines in Hollywood history.

1. You can't get a woman with money! You just try to get one without it!

2. Drinking and smoking are two of the three best things in life.

The last time there was a leak like this, Noah built hisself a boat!

There is a another western with James Garner and Lou Gossett called the "Skin Game" very tasteless and hilarious in a Mel Brooks way. THey need to release ON DVD.

reply

"Cat Ballou" also wins because "The Ballad of Cat Ballou" is a way better song than "He Rode a Blazing Saddle"! Wonderful song, makes the whole film.

As does "He did it, he missed the barn!".

The OP has a good point. It may be one of the most grossly underrated movies on IMDb. No film that rates a 100% fresh score at rottentomatoes deserves a 6.9. I suspect some young voters didn't realize it was a spoof.

"Cat Ballou" is a cute movie, but the best comedy western in "Support Your Local Sheriff". You haven't lived till you've seen "Son of Paleface" and "The Wistful Widow of Wagon Gap".
