If we hate a character

Then the actor is doing their job! To my mind, we should love them, in a way!

reply

Now I'm curious zelda-- who do you hate, I mean Love to Hate...? LOL

reply

I'm loving Orpheus since I'm not familiar with him.

reply

Absolutely Kate. Her actions are heinous, but the motivation comes from a place of pain and rejection. Sometimes it's hard for me to hate her, when I want to!

reply

Not true OP. I hated Summer and it wasn't because the actress did a good job. I could say that about a lot of characters. For example I hate Jennifer. I used to love Jennifer too. But because I hate her now doesn't mean she is doing a good job. Honestly, where did you come up with that logic?

......Zing!

reply

I hated Summer too. In my mind, if the actor did a poor job, I wouldn't necessarily hate her. Like Xander, I didn't hate him because I found the actor's skill to be substandard. I should have hated him.

It's not logic, it was just a thought. Is the like or dislike based on the character or the actor.

I think it can be either or both. Stefano was an unlikeable character who was portrayed by an excellent actor. The character was inherently unlikeable, but Joe Mascolo had the skill to really bring that out. I liked Mascolo as an actor but really hated the character.

OTOH, Will Horton became pretty unlikeable when he was unfaithful to Sonny, and many people here started really hating on Will. But it was also almost universally agreed that the actor, Guy Wilson, was incredibly ineffective in the role. A lot of people said that if Chandler Massey were still in the role, he would have played Will with more nuance and in a way that would attract viewer sympathy. So here you had a case of an unlikeable character being portrayed by a really bad actor, which in this case made things doubly worse.

So I think it works both ways.

I never HATED Stefano. I've always been a fan of a good villain. The WWE is a great example of that.

I was not watching Days when Will cheated on Sonny. I stopped when Chandler was still playing Will, but came back for the return of Steve and Bo....and the others from the Classic years. It was obviously that Guy Wilson was no Chandler Massey. I enjoyed Chandler when he was going up against EJ and his struggle with being gay. But Guy Wilson (or writing) took the character to a sappy whimp. WILL WAS TAKING ON EJ! Then he just became this guy whining about how he blew it with Sonny.

That's a good question. If it's based on the character then I agree, the actor is doing a good job representing the part.

If it's the actor, that's a different story. For e.g., I hated Theresa forever but I always thought the actress was very good. Now she's grown on me.

Now Ciara, I cannot stomach her acting or lack thereof. Her delivery, expressionless, non-emotional personality, and her nasal, whiny voice means I don't like the person playing Ciara. However, I do not like how the character behaves, either. And I don't see one as being same as the other.

I liked first Sean, hated 2nd most current Sean, didn't like early Chad, always liked most recent Chad, so, that's my opinion.

I think it has a lot to do with the actor. If I can connect with the actor or find something redeemable or even likable, then they become the villain you love to hate. Here's an example - Gene Hackman. He's an excellent actor and has built his career portraying villains. I just don't like him in any of those characters. I like him as a person but I never enjoy watching any movie that has him in it. And maybe it's because he does his job so well that you just really hate his villains. One of the characters on this show I really dislike is Kate. I don't care about any pain or whatever she may have gone through. She is completely despicable who did and would sell out her own flesh and blood. Plus, there's never any consequences for her. She comes out of everything bad she does smelling like a rose and with another pile of money.

reply

Ciara also a lot of people hate her because of the actress playing her.

I think all the characters that are meant to be great virtues of perfection, Jennifer, JJ, Julie, etc, we're meant to love but they're really bloody irritating.

It's really ironic that Julie is now regarded as an example of "virtue of perfection", since in her early years on the show she was pretty spoiled and something of a bad girl. In her very first scenes on the show in that very first episode, she got caught shoplifting and giving a false name. Even as she got older and became involved with and eventually married Doug Williams, she was always portrayed as enormously self-centered and something of a vixen. I'm not sure at what point she became respectable.

That's only true if it's a character we're supposed to hate. If you hate Stefano, then sure, the show is doing its job. If you hated Daniel (like nearly all of us did) than it's a testament to the fact that the show is doing their job poorly.

What about the Guy Wilson version of Will? Were we "supposed" to hate him, since he had cheated on Sonny and was acting like a jerk?

reply

To me that means characters you love to hate. One might consider Joffrey on Game of Thrones. I hated him. But, he was a great antagonist. The actor did a good job portraying him. We were meant to hate him. Or as you say he was a character we love to hate.

Now I look at Rafe. He is a self-righteous hypocrite. I don't hate him exactly, more of an intense dislike. Is the actor doing their job? No, imo. Galen is a mediocre actor, and lacks charisma. This lowers the character to me, and increases my dislike of him. Ciara: ditto.

I disagree. I hate Ciara, hated Summer because they stink! Others too. But I love Kate and adored Stefano. I like Andre too.

I never drink, wine.

reply

Not necessarily. There is a difference between love to hate(which is a good thing) and just not liking a character(which is a bad thing). Like Hope, Ciara and Rafe. I don't like those characters. They aren't villains. I just don't like them.
