Way Too Much Bruce Dern and James Whitmore.......

Now before any Bruce Dern or James Whitmore fans get upset (lol), I have nothing personal against either actor. In fact, I've seen both in a lot of other shows / movies. What I didn't like - in relation to "The Big Valley" appearances, though, is that the two of them (and a couple other actors as well) would frequently guest star, hardly change their physical appearance, and presumably play different characters. Did the producers of the show not think the viewers would notice? I understand that in those days guest actors were under contract to be used over and over again, but it's so noticeable that it's a bit distracting. They could have, at the very least, done something to make these frequent guest stars LOOK different in different episodes. It's just too ridiculous to see the same actor playing the role of a Barkley family friend in one episode, and then suddenly become their worst enemy in another ............

Are you watching them in reruns where episodes play every day. This wouldn't have been noticeable in the original network runs when they played only once per week. You'll notice many long-running series using the same actors over again when you see them on a daily basis: Perry Mason, Mannix, etc. They use them again and again because they know they are reliable: they're punctual, they know their lines, and they don't act like a prima donna.

But throughout it all, my motto was "Dignity! Always dignity!".

Yes, a little James Whitmore goes a long way. He was a wonderful actor, but subtle he wasn't. He's also in one the
most yawn-inducing episodes ever, "Target." This slow-as-a-glacier offering is little more than an hour of Whitmore
chewing the scenery (and everyone around him). A thudding bore of a show, and a total waste of the lovely and
talented Julie Adams.

All I know is that whenever Royal Dano or John Anderson show up on The Rifleman there is going to be trouble in North Fork.
