There wasn't regular commerce going on and their harvests were ruined by hailstorms and frost. It was also hard for two women (one older), after their son/husband left to war, to make it on their own in that situation.

Yes all 3 of them were bad. But i think the girl being the youngest was the least guilty. It was funny the older gal saying they were not sinners and had nothing to fear, when they made their way by killing random soldiers.
Also there is a shot of another old women and very young girl for one second in the film. Made me think about our 3 main female leads. One is definitely under the care and guidance of the other . As for the dude , well arnt we just dogs in war and love
