the addams or the munsters

The addams is better than the munsters.

I'm inclined to vote in favour of Addams Family as well.

For the reasons already mentioned like it's more cerebral humour...which probably has a lot to do with my primary reason; in the context of 60's household comedy, The Munsters is more traditional with it's blue collar job husband and ordinary daughter trying to get a date; the Addams Family is...very much unlike something like the Honeymooners.

The Addams Family by a mile. It's better written, far more unique, and to me, also far more enjoyable (and re-watchable) overall. It has also aged far better in my view.

Outside of the best efforts of the late, great Fred Gwynne and Al Lewis, I don't have much time for The Munsters, to be honest. To me it was just another rote 60's sitcom with Universal Monsters set dressing.

But each have their fans, and plenty of folks enjoy them both. Which is entirely as it should be.

R.I.P. Ken Weatherwax (1955-2014). I always liked his routine as Pugsley where his piggy bank was a real pig. After chasing it down and getting his money, the pig would look from behind a door and say phew.

The Addams Family was much better than The Munsters. The writing was clever, the acting, costuming, sets -- everything was better.

The Munsters had poor writing, over the top hammy characters, costuming, and acting. It was aimed at kids, while The Addams Family had more in it and could be enjoyed by adults as well.

The Munster was a dreary copycat show. When NBC found out that ABC was doing The Addams Family, they rushed to throw together whatever they could to make their own "monster family show" And that Addams have been around in magazines for ages......

I agree, I preferred the Addams Family by a long shot.

In response to darkness surroundz.

The first Munsters pilot with Joan Marshall was made in the fall of 1963. Charles Addams was approached to have his cartoons made into a TV series in early 1964.
From Steven Cox's book: "The Munsters was already in development by the fall of 1963 when David Levy of ABC decided to adapt Charles Addams's characters for a television sitcom. By February 1964, ABC had finalized a deal. ABC was originally interested in the Munsters, but for some reason was unable to acquire the property. Obviously, Addams became their answer to CBS's upcoming Munsters."

And catbookss, your assessment of the Munsters is how I see the Addams Family.

Yes The Addams Family was better. I feel like some people had to have watched the show with their eyes and ears closed to come up with the conclusions they have about the show

Full disclosure/disclaimer: I have yet to watch a single episode of The Munsters. However, since I grew up with the cartoons of Chas. Addams (I'm old enough to have seen quite a few of them in their original settings in The New Yorker), I would probably always choose The Addams Family.

Then again, I also used to watch Car 54, Where Are You?, and I loved both Fred Gwynne and Al Lewis in that show...so who knows?

I agree with the posters who have said that there is room for both series and their fans; I only wish The Addams Family could have lasted more than two seasons (and I'm sure fans of The Munsters feel the same about their favorite).

The world is a narrow bridge. The key to the crossing is not to be afraid.

I mean I guess it's kind of sad that they got cancelled after only two seasons, but on the plus side, it made it a lot easier for me to watch both. Because of my stubborn habit of wanting to watch *every* episode of any series I pick up, it was a lot easier to pick up a series that runs only 60+ episodes than it were if they had been 160+.

i much prefer the Addams family.

I loved them both. Everything was monsters, funny and scarey, in those days for us kids. I don't remember comparing them. Probably because program content was so limited compared to today one couldn't be too choosey. Only three channels, too!

I love both, but I'm partial to The Addams Family due to the 1990s movies. I've long thought that The Munsters should get a similar film treatment.
