Hate the ending!!

Pretty Good(not enough Sellers though) till the end. Why would the Princess help them frame the Inspector! Niven's character decieved her and was going to steal her diamond, but he was still so charming. So, she not only forgave him,but sends a innocent man to prison!! Ugggg! It ruined the whole movie for me. I was gonna give it a 7, but I dropped to a 5!

I'm surprised that the moviemakers got away with such an ending. Back in those days, didn't the bad guy always have to get caught?

That is very true Mrs.ElleryQueen1976. Blake Edwards must have done something to get the ending approved. The first film that I can recall in which we root for the bad guy to get away (and he does) is the original Thomas Crown Affair with Steve McQueen.

Thanks! I might look into that movie.

I have only seen Steve McQueen in one movie (The Honeymoon Machine, 1961), and I'd like to see more of him.

It might've been ahead of its time, where cheats get away with anything. Think of the George W. Bush administration, which made lying into an art form.

For which his country (now hopelessly indebted) is in a kind of "prison" (not to mention an insane asylum where paranoia and terrorists lurk everywhere), while the bad guy walks away scot-free with the jewels (both he and Cheney made millions off the Iraq invasion).
Brilliant analysis.
