My Remake Idea

With the remake craze in Hollywood today, I think that, if done right, this movie would is ripe for a remake.

To be done right, it should keep the 1960s setting. Technology today would make many plot points pointless. It should also be a relatively long movie (2-2 and a half hours). Here are also my director and cast suggestions.

Director: Ben Stiller (he can make a very comedic film, and also knows how to make large scale (Walter Mitty) and ensemble features (Tropic Thunder)

Cast:
Captain T. G. Culpepper: Tom Hanks
J. Russell Finch: Steve Carell
Emeline Marcus-Finch: Kristen Wiig
Melville Crump: Vince Vaughn
Monica Crump: Amy Poehler
Benji Benjamin: Eric Stonestreet
Ding Bell: Ben Stiller
Mrs. Marcus: Bette Midler
Sylvester Marcus: Will Ferrell
Lennie Pike: John C. Reilly
Otto Meyer: Jim Carrey
J. Algernon Hawthorne: Sacha Baron Cohen
Smiler Grogan: Mel Brooks

The movie should also feature a ton of cameos. Here are a few suggestions:
Tyler Fitzgerald: Bryan Cranston
Cab Drivers: Danny McBride and Kevin Hart
Nervous Motorist: Jim Parsons
Driver Who Runs Over Hat: Mike Myers
Firemen: Chevy Chase, Steve Martin, Martin Short
The Mayor of Santa Rosita: Martin Scorcese
Driver who Stops for Help (Jack Benny): Leonardo Dicaprio
Col. Wilberforce: Dan Aykroyd

Sorry, but I don't think that Mel Brooks has the gravitas to be believable as a seasoned, world weary, authoritative officer of the law. And frankly, I don't think he's that good of an actor. Funny, funny guy, yes, a comedy genius, but he always plays it as if he's in on the joke, and that's fine for what he does (similar to Bob Hope), but you need a Tom Hanks or a Harrison Ford or Brian Dennehy - actors who can convincingly play it straight - for the part.

I hope "my remake idea" remains just that... just an idea.
This is one movie that NEVER should be remade, not by anybody.

reply

Remakes are cheap films made for quick bucks, for the most part.

To make the film today would either require a total CGI experience, which would look as terrible as Flyboys--worse, because more people know what car chases should look like than know what WWI dogfights should look like. And it would require about a thousand lawyers.

It won't be attempted.

It's a gem as it is. should not ever be touched.

These are great cast ideas, but for Capt. Culpepper I would want...

Joe Don Baker.

This movie was already remade. They updated it and called it Rat Race. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0250687/?ref_=nv_sr_1

reply

That was my thought the first time I saw Rat Race. Lots of stars chasing a big payoff and outsiders following the whole thing. Great movie and a wonderful homage to this film. Much better than doing a remake/sequel/prequel/reboot/offshoot or whatever they do these days to cash in on a great movie.

Good cast!

"Could be worse."
"Howwww?"
"Could be raining."

Are you all aware that it IS being remade? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0936482/?ref_=nv_sr_2
