Best Charade Lines.?

"How'd you like a spanking?"

"How'd you like a punch in the nose!?"

It's something you'll get used to, a mental mindfvck can be nice.

how do you shave in there?

Cary: "Who is it?"
Audrey: "It's the house detective. Why don't you have a girl in there?"

Cary: "You should see your face."
Audrey: "What's wrong with it?"
Cary: "It's lovely."

This is the only breezy, sophisticated murder mystery ever made. And it could never be remade. The elegance of the stars and the market for this type of entertainment passed long ago (witness the lame, unpopular remake of Sabrina).

I adore this film. I was 8 when taken to see it as the Christmas movie at Radio City Music Hall in December 1963. Though parts of it scared the bejesus out of me at that age, I loved it then and love it now.

This film is full of good one-liners.

Tex - Poor old Herman. It seems like him and good luck always was strangers. Well, maybe now he'll meet up with his other hand some place.

I can't believe no one has mentioned my favorite yet: "I already know an awful lot of people, and until one of them dies, I couldn't possibly meet anyone else." HILARIOUS!!

"Don't dream it, be it."

reply

in the elevator

"this is a good place for making friends."

"here you are"
"where?'
"on the street where you live."
"how about once more aorund the park?"

reply

I'm so glad you pointed it out. I was waiting for someone to say that line. If not, I was going to say it. "On the street where you live" is that a wink-wink to Audrey Hepburn starring in My Fair Lady? After all, that is the name of one of the songs from it. I thought it was cute because I imagined that it was an inside joke concerning My Fair Lady. Maybe I'm wrong.

reply

yes, i caught that right away and loved it. but what i have spent an hour trying to find out- no results- is if reggie's reply, 'how bout once more around the park?' is also some in-joke. but i've found nothing.....

My Fair Lady didn't come out till a year later, so I doubt it....

reply

I think the line "here on the street where you live" was written into the script as an inside joke, because Audrey Hepburn at the time of Charade filming already had been cast instead of Julie Andrews from the stage play.
Otherwise it really doesn't make much sense.

"Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government."

"Can't he do something constructive like start an avalanche or something?"

In this witty movie full of super lines, I'll still have to go with howlin's answer.

"You won't be able to lie on your back for a while, but you can lie from any position, can't you?"

Some of the other classic lines:
Just about every line on the boat

Just about every line after Regina meets Mr. Crooksank.

Just about every line in ...okay, just about every line.

One that I remembered as a kid, and stuck out when the movie replayed was not a witty line, but merely the telltale line
"Be careful, Adam, he's already killed three men".

It kind of identified the movie immediately.

Now go away or I shall taunt you a second time
that's not funny!

I liked the funeral one someone mentioned a few posts back. Lost it when it cut to him clipping his nails

"Your blocking my view"
"Oh uh *looks around behind him* which view would you prefer?"
"The one your blocking"

"It's a drip dry"

reply

Reggie: What's that got to do with the CIO

reply

Walter Mattheau's reaction is priceless!: *stares* "..... C.I.A."

just fyi, i did notice 2 in-joke/foreshadowing lines when i saw this (third time in many yrs) tonight:
early on, there is a line about 'just the mail' and another stamp comment early on.

Just as "the street where you live: is a reference to My Fair Lady I think that the "once more around the park" is a reference to a line in Breakfast at Tiffany's
