Books like this kill interest in reading in children and teens.

The love of a book and art is a subjective question without doubt. However I feel like many of the classics like this, Lord of the flies act kill children's interest in reading as they re forced to read these dry, often boring books.

I read Harry Potter when it first came out so I did enjoy reading. But it seemed every book the schools made you read were out of date books written over 50 years ago that would be boring to any teen

Read another book.

I liked the Chrysalids when I read it. Nor for school, but on my own, when I was in middle grade. I liked it then. Wouldn't touch it now. It would disappoint me. I find it boring. To Kill A Mockingbird is a novel that people praise with a suspiciously greater enthusiasm than usual. You are spot on.

The practice of waiting for a book to 'pass the test of time' to appoint it to a curriculum always means that one is behind the times. Freaking academics.

the fact that you find Harry Potter more enjoyable is hardly surprising given the media coverage the books receive. I found HP boring and drab, you could constantly put whole paragraphs into a sentence.
