"Go Set a Watchman" - Who will portray Atticus & Scout in the sequel?

"Go Set a Watchman" - will be interesting to see who gets the movie rights. A sequel to "To Kill a Mockingbird" is inevitable. So the question is: Who portrays the older Atticus Finch and the adult Scout in the sequel?

Just about all of the cast is deceased with the notable exception of Robert Duvall. Gregory Peck is gone. Mary Badham, who portrayed Scout, hasn't acted since the 1960s although she has one credit in 2005.

Supposedly "Watchman" is actually the third installment of what Harper Lee envisioned as a trilogy, with the middle chapter titled "Atticus."

Obviously these plans never came to the point of writing "Atticus," but I would guess the middle chapter would have shown the sterling image of Atticus Finch starting to show cracks, before being revealed as a fully flawed mortal in "Watchman."

Since "Watchman" was already written and in the can, and Harper Lee isn't giving interviews, we'll never really know what she planned to do -- and then didn't do it for 50 years. But you'd think over those 50 years she would have finished up "Atticus," then given both that and "Watchman" some good final editing, then put them out every 10 years or so.

Back to the question of movie casting, we now know Atticus is supposed to be 72, and Jean Louise 26, and the movie is supposed to take place in the mid -50s, after Brown vs Board of Ed.

Since Jean Louise is mid -twenties, that rules out Bullock and Swank, both 40ish.

Now that the entire story has been ruptured, they may as well cast Megan Fox and Woody Allen.

Martin Scorsese should handle a remake of TKAM and/or a film adaptation of GSAW (he should iron out the inconsistencies in GSAW). you saw what he did with Cape Fear and I consider it one of the best remakes ever made. would love to see Harrison Ford as Atticus in both versions (Happy Birthday!). how old is Scout supposed to be in GSAW? if she's supposed to be in her early 20s, I say cast Annasophia Robb.

I plan to start reading it tomorrow and I'm keeping an open mind until then. to those who've read the first chapter...it's only the first chapter! things will surely be better explained by the time the book ends. maybe Atticus is disillusioned or has Dementia/Alzheimer's. the acquittal for Tom Robinson may actually be a higher court posthumously overturning his conviction (it has been 20 years). I won't pass judgment until I've finished reading the book. that's the plan.

come to think of it, Jennifer Lawrence gets so many roles nowadays I want to see more of Shailene Woodley, so I pick her!

Atticus - Val Kilmer, Keanu Reeves, Jean Claude Van Damme.
Scout - Amanda Bynes, or Margot Robbie
Robinson - either Denzel, Keith David or Nick Cannon
Radley - Taylor Lautner or Danny Trejo

Now that's Oscar bait

Tom Robinson? He died in To Kill a Mockingbird. Is there a resurrection in the new book?

reply

No mention of Boo Radley in 'Go Set a Watchman' and Tom Robinson died in TKAM. Your Atticus choices are a bit you. All those men are in their fifties or sixties, Atticus is well into his seventies.

I can't believe that people are actually parroting the urban legend of Truman Capote being the actual writer of To Kill a Mockingbird. He didn't have the heart, sensitivity, sensibility, and humanity to create such a timeless tale of compassion. I assume none of these people have ever read any of his books, and are only going by the awful film adaptions of them.

reply

Hmmm...can't they just reanimate Gregory Peck via CGI?

"Forget it, Jake. It's the internet."

I don't think a movie sequel is inevitable.

reply

Maybe Jessica Chastain could play Scout.
Then somebody like Gene Hackman to portray Atticus Finch.

reply

Hackman is retired.

reply

I dontvknow for Atticus, but Jena Malone is the only one I could see playing Scout.
