This Movie just sucks!
Harold Hill is a total goof, the songs are horrible, and the rest of the characters are boring (except Marian perhaps). Not funny or entertaining, just annoying! Another possible candidate for worst film ever !

shareEither you need serious mental help OR you are very young, with no background in this area.......................
shareThis film just happens to be one of the finest movie musicals ever turned out.
shareAnd why do you think so?
shareTrue- it doesn't have any CGI,violence, buckets of blood. It has a coherent script, beautiful, creative music interwoven with the story, evocative emotions, fantasy, unbelievably wonderful performances-and it just gets better thru the years.
shareThank you, BoMar! You summed it all up!
I feel sad for Tall-Thin...this movie is a slice of Americana that appeals to anyone who has a yearning for a simpler, more innocent time. The music appeals to people whose context is the Broadway musical and its re-incarnation on film. I'd be interested in your seeing the following:
My Fair Lady
West Side Story
Sound of Music
Fiddler on the Roof
To get a bit more modern,
Chicago
Cabaret (although this one was made to be the ANTI-musical, since all numbers that wouldn't be sung naturally i.e. they take place IN the cabaret, and that were in the show, were cut from the movie or used as background music).
If your community does musical theater, see what's playing there and go see a couple; there are musicals that tour the country regularly (I'm writing you from Keene, NH where I am singing in an opera performance; one of the last attractions at the Colonial Theater here was a road show of THE PRODUCERS which I considered putting on the above list but am not sure it quite belongs...) Go see one or two of those. Write back! I'll be looking for your reply.
I'd love to hear your reaction to these films.
Outside of the Wizard of Oz, Maz, have you ever watched any musicals? If so, I'm sure we'd all like to hear (read) which ones you think are good. Personally, the Music Man is one of my all time favorite movies.
In the kingdom of the blind, you're the village idiot.
My mother loved musicals. In fact when Mame (another Robert Preston movie everyone seems to forget), came out my mom brought me to see it.
And I'm STILL waiting for Lost Horizon (you know the one with Michael York) to finally be released on DVD. Will pay serious money for it.
I dont think you will find many agreeing with you. While its a pity we did not get Barbara Cook there is no denying Shirley Jones (as always) does a great job. Its great that Preston classic performance is forever preserved.
The film is delightful and the show itself a great American classic.
Totally agree. And I would like to remind you that many high schools perform this for their yearly show (do they still do that?)
shareHa ha yeah right I suppose you think highschool musical is better? Silly teenagers...just kidding im also a teenager but this movie owns
shareWell, I too thought that it was God Awful. Americana or not.
The horrible dancing. The horrible songs. The horrible acting. The people I was watching it with agreed that Shipoopi is a terrible song, yet they love this musical!
And I love musicals, just not this one. When watching, I wondered to myself if it was campy on purpose and if people take it as one of those guilty pleasures (even though it's bad you love it anyway). Maybe it is a generational thing, but I assure you my problem with it has nothing to do with High School Musical.
You need MENTAL HELP !!!!!!

I know this is nearly a year old, but...surely you CAN'T be serious?!?!
The point about Shipoopi is that it IS a silly song.
It's not a generational thing, it's more of a TASTE thing, and this one obviously doesn't suit yours.
Try it again, but by yourself (without the peer pressure) and see how you like it then!
Courage is being scared to death - but saddling up anyway. John Wayne

My God. If you can't really experience the sheer joy of "Trouble with a captial T" or "Mariaon the Librarian," I'm sorry...
Wonderful, funny movie!!!
You are SO right!
I don't act...I react. John Wayne

People with a sense of humor seemed to like it, people who enjoy comedy films like it, people who know it's just a MOVIE like it!! god...
Hi
Everything Burns!
If it sucks so much then why did you watch it in the first place? In case you didn't know this movie is a classic (do you have a crush on Marian?). Harold Hill is NOT a total goof and the man who plays him has been in a lot of war movies, and how can you say Marcellus is boring when he's played by Buddy Hacket?? The songs are AMAZING and the dancing is great. Just a heads-up, if you hate the Music Man then don't waste your time watching Oklahoma!, Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music, or any other classics!
p.s.
If you do have a crush on Marian you better hunt down Shirley Jones. Her website is www.shirleyjones.com.
Trying to get attention for your miserable self by advancing a lousy movie review of a really magnificent film, is just plain idiotic and stupid.

Well, to anyone who rants that The Music Man is a bad film:
Either you are closing your eyes to a situation you do not wish to acknowledge, or you are not aware of the calibre of disaster indicated by the presence of a fool's fable in your community.
