I'm going through a situation very similar to plot of this movie, & I'm trying to understand what my ex gf sees in getting loaded all of the time. She started out very casually drinking, but now it's progressed to the point of her personality becoming mean. Subsequently we broke up. I couldn't take the mood swings, & attitude problem she has. It seems like I left a different person than the one I was in love with. All she has left is her booze, & her bar buddies, while I'm heartbroken. I'm trying to make sense of this addiction. Help please! This is a serious question. Sarcastic *beep* need not reply! Thanks.

So why make a life out of booze? What's the hook?

Read the book "The Diseasing of America:" by Stanton Peele. He debunks all of that nonsense. I do not drink (never have) but saw this movie for the first time on TCM last night.

AA is a dangerous, destructive cult which damages those seeking help. As a nurse there is ONLY detox that is a medical issue all of the rehab stuff and "poor me" excuses are a joke.

It's unfortunate that you posted at all. I know many people who have met friends at AA and the support helps them avoid the chemical dependence of alcohol. Sure, drinking is a choice. But once someone has become addicted, getting help and support from other people who have beat it is a good thing to do. AA is not a cult. It is support. And everyone is free to come and go if they want.

People become alcoholics because they make a decision to drink too often and too much, until they become addicted. The first step in overcoming it is not to listen to idiots who claim it is a "disease", and accept personal responsibility.

The OP needs to learn about addiction, principally that he can't do anything to control it in other - just not enable the addict. Al-Anon is a great resource for people dealing with addicts in their lives: https://al-anon.org
