Outdated?

I'm thinking of watching this show on DVD. Should I start with season one? Is it still relevant today?

reply

Why does it need to be relevant today? If it's entertaining and enjoyable, then that's all that matters.

I specifically seek out TV shows and movies that would not be considered "relevant" today, because I enjoy them so much more than the trashy products of today's trashy world.

reply

Thanks, I'll give it a try.

reply

Of course it isn't relevant today it's about White Hillbillies who were 60-70 years out of date in 1962 who fell backwards into money from their land owning White Privilege.

reply

The Clampetts didn't have any "white privilege". They were dirt-poor hillbillies who lucked into money. After that, they had rich-people privilege.

reply

Outdated? No. Even today there are socially unrefined people who make their way into big money. More so with its sister show Green Acres in terms of rich city people trying their hand at living a rural lifestyle complete with running a farm. The most outdated show in the trifecta of Henning shows is Petticoat Junction. I don't know of any 20 something group of sisters sitting around singing songs from the golden age of Vaudeville complete with playing a piano. Or a dumb old coot conning the neighbors or town folk with his obvious schemes.

reply

Values were better then in many ways.

reply

Relevant? To what? The 21st century? It was made in the early to mid 1960s, so you watch it with the fact in mind that what you are seeing is from that period. If it interests you or makes you laugh, it has succeeded, and that is all it was designed to do. To shows like "The Beverly Hillbillies", being relevant is irrelevant.

reply

I used to love this show.

reply

Relevant? No. Never was.

It’s just good old fashioned fun that’s still worth watching today.

It has the occasional lesson about tolerance and acceptance, etc. but doesn’t force it down our throats with sloppy heavy handedness like today’s preachy shows and movies.
