Others like this?

I'd consider this one of the greats of horror films. What others would you recommend that are on the same level of psychological horror?

For me, The Others comes to mind, though that movie wasn't too scary to me, just creepy and sad.

El Orfanato....

Hands down the best movie I've seen in this type of genre

Also, check out "Haunted" starring Aiden Quinn. It has the same mood as "The Innocents".

The OLD DARK HOUSE (1932) comes into this category; it is based on a novel by J.B. Priestley. However it does not involve the supernatural.

Haunted (1995) with Aiden Quinn - very similar feel

Night of the Hunter (1955) with Robert Mitchum - classic http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0048424/
little girl sings creepy song in this one, too

The original THE HAUNTING (1963) is the only one which can match THE INNOCENTS.

Well, it's kinda hard to say what is on the same level of psychological horror as The Innocents because this movie is the scariest horror movie of all time, so with that status alone no other horror movie is on its level.

But, the horror movies that I'd consider to be "close" to The Innocents in quality and haven't been mentioned in this thread would be Schock (1977) by Mario Bava.

I would suggest:
Angel Heart
Jacobs Ladder
The Machinist
Rosemary's Baby
The Woman In Black (TV version, although the new film version is ok)
Shutter Island
Shutter (Japanese Version)
Saw
The Butterfly Effect
Vertigo (kinda)
The Number 23
Identity
Flatliners
Secret Window

Check out Robert Wise's 1963 film 'the Haunting'.

"The Other" (the 1972 film, NOT to be confused with "The Others" which I like also.)

"The Mephisto Waltz"

"Don't Look Now."

"The Lady in White."

reply

Yes, yes, The Other (1972 - about... a twin?) is a great, richly atmospheric, creepy film.
