That scene made me cry especially when she searched for Cat after she put him out in the rain. I sobbed.

Because of what she said earlier -- "I'm like cat, no name" etc etc.

Throwing the cat out = anger with herself.

In addition, she was emotionally devastated by Jose's break-up letter. She was sad, angry. The emotions influenced her. Remember she flings the cat off the drawer when she's trashing the apartment because of Fred's death. So when she's upset, she takes her frustrations out on the cat
