Mrs.Peel's clothes

Her wardrobe is so unfortunate...its a good thing she is so attractive because her clothes are godawful, especially that blue tracksuit thing. I bet it was made of velvet.

reply

are you kidding me?? her clothes are great and a true and proper trademark of the show.

reply

I bet her clothes PEEL right off...mwahahahahaha

To you perhaps (how old are you?), but BITD, I drove my mother insane wanting to dress like her. The jumpsuits with racing stripes, the tailored pantsuits, the accessories, especially the watches-one of which I finally got for xmas in '68.

The camera simply adored Diana Rigg, right from the earliest episodes shot. One of her first, "The Master Minds," has the camera slowly pan from foot to head, something they were better able to do on film, which the earlier videotaped shows could not. It's just a pity that the scantier outfits were all featured during the final black and white season, while the color episodes showcased the famous one piece 'Emmapeelers.' "A Sense of History" provided my favorite outfit during the climax.

One episode, Castle De'ath, I think has Emma walikng about the castle in a nice little night gown. Made quite the impression.

Indeed, a sight to behold.

Definitely preferred the black leather get-ups from before the show switched to color. I did like some of her coats. Fortunately she could carry off anything.

Think she dredded just fine.

To a 12-year-old girl, she was my fashion idol! I loved her clothes (although I only ever saw them in black and white).

The black and white episodes were the best ones... Unfortunately, they toned things down when it went to colour. As I've said, those early shows were remarkable for a young chap of 13...

I saw her in an episode yesterday where she took a job in posh conservative store. She was wearing her shiny jump suit while serving. She got fired for flirting with the customers. But I would thought that she would have sent home straight away for dressing like that.

I love the retro clothes though I am a fashion photographer ,would love to borrow them for a shoot .

reply

Agreed, nothing wrong with the stunning Emma's clothes.

I really did notice her outfits possibly in the way that I noticed Eva Longoria's in 'Desperate Housewives'. Emma Peel's clothes are always smart in terms of the fashion of the day. I doubt very much if anyone in a 60s British TV show could match her wardrobe.

Just on the Diana/Honor argument: I prefer the softer features of Diana but I can understand why others may prefer the more physical Honor. However in terms of acting ability Dame Diana is a clear winner.

Peel's style was definitely more Mod mid-60s than Cathy Gale.

Someone above, (many years ago,) said they didn't like Rigg's "flat chest" and thought Blackman had the Better Look with her waspish waist and big boobs. I'd go as far as including Blackman's hairstyle to this gentleman's argument.

I would say that Blackman/Gale was just as much in her time, as Rigg/Peel was in hers.

The Gale Look was coming out of the 1950s. Women still wore those push-up, bullet bras and girdles.
Even in Goldfinger she looks like a woman from a bygone era: Post 50s, Pre-Beatles. She looks Old; the same way your 28 yr old grandfather looked So Old in your Family Picture Albums.

With Mrs Peel, you get a post-Beatles, hair down, un-"cinched", un-"pushed up", Modern Woman.
Fashion-wise, Mrs. Peel was what young women wanted to look like in 66-67.

In 63-64, I seriously doubt that those same young ladies wanted to look like their mom's divorced sister.

First of all while Honor Blackman was more well endowed as the term went, I would hardly say Diana Rigg was flat-chested. Thinner to be sure, but...

Fashion is hardly my area, but as for the look it is obvious that Mrs. Peel was very much of her time, if not ahead of it. As an American I know Ms. Blackman more for her iconic role in Goldfinger. But it is fair to say as Eta does that she had a look that was more dated than Ms. Rigg's. Even in the B&W stuff.

Funny the mention of the Beatles. I remember without remembering the specific lines how the Bond character in Goldfinger said something disparaging about The Beatles, who at the time were in their early heyday, certainly in England. It comes across today as an example of a certain sort of generational conflict. I would think the Bond of Goldfinger not only found Ms. Galore attractive, but might not have known quite what to make of Emma Peel (who did come along a year or two later). Well, things changed very quickly in those days.

I've watched "Goldfinger" about six more times in the past several weeks! Encore/Starz expanded their "July is 007" theme into August, so I've been binging on Bond~especially Sean Connery.

From IMDb:
James Bond (Sean Connery) to Jill Masterson (Shirley Eaton):
"My dear girl, there are some things that just aren't done, such as drinking Dom Perignon '53 above the temperature of 38 degrees Fahrenheit. That's just as bad as listening to the Beatles without earmuffs!"
