Mrs.Peel's clothes
Her wardrobe is so unfortunate...its a good thing she is so attractive because her clothes are godawful, especially that blue tracksuit thing. I bet it was made of velvet.

shareEh I guess that's your opinion because I happen to think she looks stunning in many of her outfits. I'll admit I don't really appreciate the jump suits so much, but she also wears a number of nice mini-skirts, dresses and other nice things. This is one of my favourite: http://londonpostcard.co.uk/images/lu/lu638.jpg
If you mean 'unfortunate' as in dated, I'll agree, but a lot of them are still fun.
Her outfits were the most fashionable at the time. And, they age better than the outfits worn by Joanna Lumley in the 70s "Avengers"... loved her character but HATED her wardrobe. And, Rigg's fashion was perhaps not nearly as bad as the horrid hairstyle of Tara King.
shareYup.
Very dated clothes that were very hip and trendy at the time. She's one of the prettiest women I've ever seen, but the outfits don't flatter her for the most part. The horizontal blue striped mini dress she wore in "The Positive Negative Man" looks great on her though.
Just saw "The Fear Merchants". Peel looks terrific here as they have her dressed in form hugging numbers that really flatter her looks and figure. Check out the black jumpsuit with the cutouts on the sides.
Wow!
You must remember that in the context of the Swinging Sixties, fashion was as important as rock music. Carnaby Street, and King's Road in London were its epicenter, where the mini-skirt and virtually every other innovation was born. Diana Rigg was an absolute icon back then, with Twiggy, of course.
shareI love Mrs Peels outfits - for the most part!
And, by God, you were home by supper on a school night!
I loved Mrs Peel's costumes, i'm only sorry her leather catsuit never made it into the colour series...although it was close in You've Just Been Murdered.
Diana Rigg is so gorgeous, especially in James Bond too. I loved the outfit she wore in Return of The Cybernauts but then again many of her costumes were used in different episodes. Despite the production budget apparently being 500,000 pounds....but i HIGHLY doubt that. The show does look fantastic but since Dame Diana had money disputes but this is for another thread!
I loved most of the costumes, especially the action suits. They were fashionable and functional. Tara got the worst of things in her series, with Purdy close behind. 60's fashions hold up far better than 70's, in my opinion. Steed looked great in any era.
shareHer clothes.... Keep in mind that the Avengers only went to colour when it 'jumped the pond' and was shown in America. The black and white episodes were so much better. And her leather suit...... Ouch.

I LOVE her clothes! Are you kidding? I love the leather outfits, and the mod raincoats, and the tailored suits... She looks fabulous! I think you are kind of missing the point with this show, these clothes are fun and fashionable 60's mod, Emma Peel is a fashion ICON! Thank god she doesn't wear what girls wear today, flip flops and jeans!
I watch this show over and over just to see my favorite outfits! I love them all!

BlondeIsBetter is right, she's an icon. I totally love her clothes too.

Daniel Radcliff and I disagree with you.

It always made me smile, you knew exactly when she going to be in a fight when she donned a jumpsuit or the like. Heaven forbid she got into a grapple in one of her posh frocks.

The Avengers is a virtual reference catalogue of 60's haute couture.
Like it or don't, it not only reflected the styles of the era, it helped to set the standard.
It probably doesn't occur to you, but when Mrs Peel was running around in those "tracksuit things" tracksuits didn't exist. The look of what is now referred to as the "tracksuit" was no doubt directly inspired by Mrs Peel's catsuits.
(The series "That Girl!" is also an amazing source of 60s period fashion references. Marlo Thomas's clothes are equally iconic.)
Most of the clothes Rigg wore in Season 4 ( including the fighting suits which were named “Belt-up” and “Black Bottom” ) were created by John Bates ; a recent book about the life and style of the designer includes a chapter about the Avengers phenomenon . Some of his models were pretty good I will admit , the season 5 tracksuits sure I wasn’t a bif fan of , but at least I liked the fact that the disappareance of Mrs.Peel’s leather catsuit meant that one of Cathy Gale’s stolen credentials was given her back . Actually Elizabeth Shepherd wore a red costume when she originally played Emma in “The Town of No Return “ before being cast out in favour of Rigg and I would have preferred if they didn’t change that but , as usual , the big bosses were too afraid to try to be original and Emma Peel had to copy Cathy Gale in this also .
Now Diana sure looked good with it but , it goes without saying , not as much as Honor , being quite flat-chested and lacking her predecessor’s wasp veist .
An ironic thing that not everyone knows is that Honor’s original leather catsuit was green , not black cause it was supposed to televise better . Fortunately with the improvement of the lightning techniques black was soon adopted . Patrick Macnee had the idea that Cathy would have worn leather , still the day the legendary catsuit was inaugurated he arrived on the set unprepared and he apparently “ paled and forgot his lines when he caught sight of Honor in her gleaming outfit” !
I found this funny anecdote on the original theatre programme for the premiere of “Who Killed Santa Claus ?” , a 1969 piece by Terence Feely starring Honor alongside her back then husband Maurice Kaufmann .
Cathy’s costume was definitely more fetish than Emma’s . Honor remembers that back in her Avengers days she once visited the wardrobe department at the studio to find her catsuit wasn’t there cause the studio boss used to take her trousers and throw them among the men at dinner’s parties . Wow , that’s kinky !
Tara King’s harlequin look was quite atrocious as her haircuts were , making her looking thirty years older than her actual age .
And Purdey’s bob .. well , it is quite impossible to wear unless you have Joanna Lumley’s perfect features . Since I wasn’t alive in the 70’s I do not dare to imagine the horrors you could see in the street back in the day with this haircut being the most popular around !

While I'll agree Rigg is not what she once was, Blackman has never done much for me, with her masculine demeanour and harsh voice, but to each their own.

I know Cathy Gale was written as a man, but I was not just referring to the role. Honour Blackman doesn't do much for me in general, I'm afraid.
I love strong, independent woman and that has a lot to do with my love for The Avengers. The strength doesn't have to come at the sacrifice of their femininity, as exemplified by Emma Peel.
Purdey in Dirtier by the Dozen sums it up nicely-
Gambit: Why didn't you burn this with all the other girls? (referring to Purdey's bra)
Purdey: Didn't have to. I knew I was emancipated.
But we are getting a bit off topic in an Emma Peel fashion topic.
Personally how can Cathy Gale be defined masculine is beyond me . She sure did never mainly resort to her seduction skills to handle a job ( she encouraged T.P McKenna a bit in "Trojan Horse" though ) but that's because the first seasons were more modern and feminist and there were never episodes that wasted her talents like Mrs.Peel's were in episodes such as "What Her Butler Saw" when she wasn't given anything good to do apart from that ridicolus seduction of Denis Quilley . That's because overseen things like that just would have not brought anything new to television as that was women's oldest weapon and to the day female leads' only skill in spy shows .
The term "Kinky" was basically coined for the new kind of fashion Honor/Cathy inspired . Personally I think many people believe Cathy is considered less feminine than Mrs.Peel is because she often crushes with Steed when her successor was more amenable with him . But that's because the spirit of the show was very different in the beginning with Cathy being a character with a strong conscience who often opposed the means of the originally much darker Steed . In the later seasons Mrs.Peel always regarded everything as a joke and there was no trace of moral conflict making the show much lighter .
Also Emma was much more vain than Cathy and most of the time when she is walking somewhere I have the impression that I am watching a fashion parade rather than a show of that kind ( personally I believe that Mrs.Peel following Judy Parfitt at the beginning of "Escape In Time" carressing her hair with that "look , I'm pretty" smile was not the epitome of feminity but just very irritating ) .
To me Honor was easily the truest woman in the Avengers compared to all the younger girls who succeeded her . I actually think that she was always replaced by less strong character because she was just too much woman for her time and it was feared that many new world audiences would have been scared .
Perhaps you could start your own Cathy/Honour topic, and we can chat about it there instead of derailing this thread.
shareI always thought Emma Peel was very hot stuff running around in those outfits! She made television worth watching to us boys growing up in the sixties.

Amen and hallelujah to that! She was classy, elegant, stylish, utterly charming, witty, strong-minded and independent, and the most gorgeous woman on either side of the Atlantic. Every male who wasn't blind, gay, or a eunuch fell in love with Diana Rigg.
All the universe . . . or nothingness. Which shall it be, Passworthy? Which shall it be?
Couldn't agree more. That black leather suit made 60's television riveting for a young chap of 14.

there is nothing wrong with a woman sounding like a man but i draw the line at male
genitalia on a woman.
Honore Blackman has aged quite well I agree.
