Tony Curtis saying kissing Marilyn was like 'kissing Hitler?'

Did he really say this? If so, did he say it during an interview while the movie was being produced, or after it was released? What did he mean by this? Was he being sarcastic? Was he implying that Marilyn had a cold personality? Didn't he retract what he said back in the 1990's?

Thanks!

Cheers!

If he was "joking" why did he never say that during Monroe's lifetime, or for many years after? Why, indeed did he not assure MM that he was joking? She went to her grave with that remark hanging over her.

I had read that she used steroid infused face cream that grew peach fuzz on her face, she was told to shave it but she refused because she said it made her face glow.Maybe that's why he made the comment,to much fuzz on the upper lip.

I never heard this before. It sounds like something that could be true. Do you remember what your source of information was ?

Thanks for the info.

Thanks for the info "bzydad-42-124629." I learned a lot about Marilyn and the techniques used to make her "picture perfect."

No. Marilyn always had that baby fine blonde peach fuzz on her face. You can see it it some of her earliest modeling shots. (on her cheeks, not her upper lip.) Nobody told her to shave it off. It could be covered by makeup. (Ginger Rogers also had it. As did Elizabeth Taylor, but Taylor's was black, so---she kinda did have to shave.) Eve Arnold, the photographer, suggested the fuzz captured the light in some unusual, flattering way. But MM was never on record talking about the hair on her face!

Curtis was reacting to the stress of working with MM, tho they'd all gotten along well during the location scenes. He meant it in a mean way, and never apologized to Marilyn. She even brought it up in her last interview with Life magazine in 1962. She had clearly been hurt by the remark. But did not refer to Curtis by name. She just said, "some actor..."

Dear Bzy...

Marilyn ALWAYS had that peach fuzz on her face, even as a young model--not her upper lip, however. Nobody told her to shave, It could be covered by makeup onscreen. Gingers Rogers had a similar issue, as did Elizabeth Taylor. (Tho Taylor's fuzz was black, so it was removed periodically. Taylor's "mustache" is obvious in some of her later films.)

I only know that Marilyn's alleged reply was "It is Mr Curtis's own business who he has kissed."

There is a lot of doubt that it was actually said.

I wasn't there and I didn't know either performer. But the more I analyze this "statement" made by Mr. Curtis, the more I think he never said it.

Cheers!

He DID say it! It was reported at the time and he NEVER denied it. Years later he did. Years after that, he admitted it but said "I was just joking." (Too bad he never told MM he was joking. She referenced the remark in her very last interview. Though she did not mention Curtis by name.)

Thanks for clearing things up "denis-38." Now I know the order of events.

Sincerely,

Steve :-)

Marilyn Monroe was a very disturbed, unhappy, insecure woman, and while acting seemed her only vent out of these issues, her life in general was pretty miserable. Hearing about her death in 1962 was the only time I ever saw my mom cry. She was a public health nurse and knew all about mental issues.

Marilyn Monroe was notorious in Hollywood for being hard to work with. Monroe’s crippling sense of anxiety caused her to always show up late on the set and made her an unreliable and aggravating co-star to have to work with.

The late Tony Curtis was just one of Monroe’s colleagues who grew frustrated with her. However, it would seem that Curtis could not seem to make up his mind as far as how he felt about Marilyn Monroe in the years following her death.

Curtis was famously quoted as saying that kissing Monroe was like “kissing Hitler”. After Monroe’s death Curtis seemed to want to back away from having made the remark or put it into some kind of context.

“In 1959 Tony Curtis and Marilyn Monroe worked together in the very popular classic comedy ‘Some Like It Hot’ directed by Billy Wilder. Monroe was a glamorous icon in 1959, and the film contained a kissing scene between Curtis and Monroe. Curtis says he was asked repeatedly what it was like to kiss the leading screen siren of the age, and finally in exasperation he replied sarcastically that it was like kissing Hitler. He simply wanted to end the questioning with a joke. He really thought she was a great kisser, and people misunderstood the quote. That is one explanation he has given.

Another explanation is given in press accounts from the 1960s that state Curtis was very angry with Monroe because of her actions during filming which reportedly were irresponsible and self-centered. She refused to follow schedules and required a large number of retakes because she would not say her lines properly. These difficulties precipitated his comment about kissing Monroe. Curtis was simply expressing his extreme irritation.”
