Walter Brennan
What a performance! He was really funny.
shareOh yes! I often find myself imitating his drawl (and I'm from the South)...Brenna is a classic!
sharethey should have powered his awful chirping down, a little was fine but a lot just got tiresome.
share>>> they should have powered his awful chirping down
Agreed. The high pitch of his voice was really grating.

No they shouldn't have, he was great and it's not like his was in the film every five minutes.

Really? I mean, i hate Jar Jar Binks and the kid from Shane as well, but I loved Stumpy! He was my favorite character! He was so effing hilarious. He sounded exactly like a classic character actor of the "old coot" in classic Westerns. He kept reminding me of Gus Chiggins from The Best of Will Ferrell on SNL. He cracked me up with every line. Well whatever, we don't all have the same brain.

This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
Anyone who hates either Stumpy or the kid from Shane should be drenched with wolf urine.

Even though i thought stumpy could have been toned Down a bit (especially in that final shoot out with dynamite) I can see why some people enjoy that type of humor. But as for the kid in shane... How could anyone not say he was terribly annoying?
share+1 for "drenched with wolf urine," hahaha.

shareCheck out his Oscars record- one of the greatest support actors in Hollywood history. And this performance was a gem.
shareWalt had quite a range. With his teeth out and his drawl on, it's a stretch between folksy Stumpy and the sophisticated sports reporter in "The Pride of the Yankees" and the cold-blooded river pirate in "How The West Was Won", just to name a few....

And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written:KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.
Very true. Gary Cooper did not want to work with him again in "The Westerner" because if you didn't bring your A game, Brennan would act you off the soundstage. (Cooper's words, not mine.)
..Joe
I really loved him.
Mohsen Qassemi
I found his performance rather broad, mainly for comic relief and rather surprising that he is a 3 time Oscar winner.
Its that man again!!
Good ol' Stumpy, what a memorable and amusing character. I was seriously laughing at everything he said.
Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!
Walter Brennan was one of the most versatile actors of not only HIS time, but ANY time.
He was basically without peer, and "Coop" wasn't the only actor who made sure to bring their "A" game when working with him. In the films they made together, Howard Hawks paired him with John Wayne on purpose, because he was one of the very few that could actually hold his own with JW on screen, and vice versa...

Walter Brennan was brilliant and very talented. He made it look easy but pulling off comic relief in a film such as this required brilliant comedic talent and timing. Count me as a HUGE fan of Walter Brennan in almost ALL of his work.
I was always a fan until I read the following here on IMDb:
"During the 1960s he was convinced that the anti-war and civil rights movements were being run by overseas Communists, and said as much in interviews. He told reporters that he believed the civil rights movement in particular, and the riots in places like Watts and Newark and demonstrations in Birmingham, Alabama, were the result of perfectly content "Negroes" being stirred up by a handful of "troublemakers" with an anti-American agenda. Those on the set of his last series, The Guns of Will Sonnett (1967)--in which he played the surprisingly complex role of an ex-army scout trying to undo the damage caused by his being a mostly absentee father--said that he cackled with delight upon learning of the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert F. Kennedy in 1968, and several crew members recalled how he actually danced a spontaneous jig when he heard of King's murder."

You DO realize that like the "facts" presented on wikipedia, most ANYTHING on IMDb can be placed here WITHOUT verification, right??
I've worked with MANY people who were around in those days as assistant directors and craftsmen. Some of whom worked on that VERY set, and they repeatedly have said it NEVER happened, and also...isn't it strange that NO ONE has ever come forth PUBLICLY to make these accusations???
No ACTOR, no director, no crew members...that's because it NEVER happened...
Grow up, troll. If a BS story causes you to quit being a fan, then you're a bigger idiot than trying to make us think you are...
Use what little brain you have, and think about the "story" for once...it just doesn't add up...
I don't act...I react. John Wayne
The quotation is from the New York Times article quoting cast members. They stand by the quote. Let me know when they retract it.
shareReally?!?
You're saying this, but you're not supplying the article?
The reason for this is that the article DOESN'T EXIST! If it did, you would SITE THE SOURCE!!!
PLEASE, provide a link to it, so we can put it to rest, once and for all!!
Come ON, troll baby! Let's DO THIS!!!!
BTW...I've actually read this "article," and its NOT a NY Times piece, its merely a bio ABOUT Brennan ON the NY Times site!! Also, THERE ARE NO QUOTES!" There are just vague references to the alledged "incident."
Here, I've included it:
Those on the set of his last series, The Guns of Will Sonnett -- in which he played the surprisingly complex role of an ex-army scout trying to undo the damage caused by his being a mostly absentee father -- say that he cackled with delight upon learning of Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination in 1968.
You are PATHETIC and so very sad. Next time, please don't try to lie your way out of something...you'll be exposed as the troll that you are...
I don't act...I react. John Wayne
Haters try to make up stories about Brennan being a bigoted hateful man, but they just don't cut it. He was just too talented and devoted to his craft to waste emotion on such things.
That fact goes for just about every actor who doesn't tow the Liberal Hollywood line. It is sad they try and fill up the bios of these great actors with their filth.

don't look here, the jokes between your ears
I've never yelled "shut the heck up" so many times in one film. Sure, the man was talented, but this role was way overdone.
shareBrennan was good at playing toothless old men in Westerns and his Stumpy is entertaining but I loved him in Red River playing the cook. The scene where he tells Dunston played by The Duke that he was being too autocratic is wonderful. 'You was wrong Mr Dunston'
