Banshee scene scared me sh**less!!

My God, I was scared to death that I had nightmares. TWO, in fact, that I clearly remember.

1) I scream hysterically insane whenever I heard her wailing right OUTSIDE my bedroom window every single night. Doctors and my mother would restrain me while I scream horrifically "MAKE IT STOP!!!!" Geeeezus, it almost felt like The Exorcist or something.

2) Imagine you're in a fairly big house, it's dark and stormy outside, and you keep hearing this unusual sound coming from downstairs, all the way down to the basement. That's what happened in this dream. I get up from bed, creep down the stairs, following the sound. I walk to the door leading to the basement and descend down the stairs. The place is dark (of course) with vague dim lights, the floor is covered with gray or green mist and there across from me is the banshee herself. She even spoke to me, more like hissing, "What are you doing here?! Get out!" I didn't move of course, you can guess why. So she makes a loud scream-like wail from the movie. And that's all I can remember.

I never wanted to see that movie again, particularly the banshee scenes. I became afraid of walking out of my room at night when the living room is completely dark. Remember when Darby's daughter was lying in bed unconcious and he heard the banshee's wailing outside the house and he leaves the room, opens the front door and there, floating up to him is the banshee's scary-beyond-all-reason face?

I sound like a mental wreck, don't I?

Hey Countess! Let's tell Hollywood to make a remake? LOL!

I used to be absolutely terrified of the banshee (as well as Jack from the Jack in the Box commercials). I still can't bring myself to watch it, but I saw the scene in a Nostalgia Critic episode. Still pretty creepy. And I'm 18.

I watched this movie as a kid at my grandparents house. Man, that Banshee gave me nightmares for years :)

I recently found this movie on sale so bought it. I haven't seen it since I was kid, but I love this movie. That banshee though! I had forgotten about that part! I remember it freaking me out as a kid too.

Wow. Over 7 pages of people just like me. I also had nightmares about the banshee when I was a kid (though I don't remember the specifics), and any time after that I would run and hide when I knew that scene was coming up.

I recently found a copy of the movie, but I haven't watched it again yet because, although I'm 33, I'm still not sure I want to see the banshee scene again. (Not sure if it would scare me now or if it would just bring all of those memories back up again.)

When I was younger the banshee freaked me out. I thought it was an old horror film untill about 4 years ago!

It still creeps me out when I see it now.

The Banshee was terrifying. I think her most effective moment is at Darby's house. When he opens the door and she moves with lightning fast speed up to the door, and we get a chilling close up of her face, complete with her soulless wailing. It still give me chills down my spine today.

I think she's an underrated cinematic monster.

Am I the only one who was never afraid of her? I thought she was beautiful. Creepy, but beautiful. I loved watching her comb her long hair while she wailed. So true to the Irish legend. She was a wonderful special effect.

I first saw this movie in 1960 when I was 12 and loved it,especially the Banshee and the Headless Coachman.
However, the movie which absolutely terrified me at about 5 years of age was The Earthquake of San Francisco with Spencer Tracey,Clark Gable etc. I can still vividly remember waking up screaming in terror for weeks afterwards.(lol)

I was petrified of the banshee when I was a child.

Funny thing is, I watched it when I was 4 or 5 and had no problems. I watched it when I was 7 or 8 and couldn't sleep properly for 2 years. I mean, I was screaming and everything.

I must have repressed it when I was much younger because I completely forgot that bitch.

*beep* banshee!

Add me to the list--saw it at a theater in the early 70's and was inconsolable for days...couldn't walk past the theater with lobbycards of the f'ing thing without having a kiddie-coronary...how much of my adult life has been affected by that childhood terror? Between that, some of the fairy-tale witches from the cartoons, Chernabog...gee thanks a lot unca Walt! I'm watching the movie tonight to see what all the fuss was about 40 years or so ago
Nilbog! It's goblin spelled backwards! This is their kingdom!

Revisiting this thread 4 years later (gypsy7), still effects me. That link of the picture gave me chills.

My seven year-old sister was so terrified by the Banshee that my parents had to take her screaming and crying out into the theater lobby. Just another example of a scene in a Disney movie guaranteed to terrify children.

Have you ever watched the forest fire scene in Bambi from the first three rows of seats in the theater? I did, as a thirty-something adult, and found it really scary!

Family friendly, indeed!

Former Disneyland Cast Member here, so needless to say I pretty much like anything Disney.
But I do have to admit that the movie, Bambi, is the one movie that I just can't bring myself to see again. For several reasons.
The funny thing is I really like that song "April Showers," but so much of the rest of the movie is either frightening and/or really sad.

I saw it a theater when I was five in 1959, and the banshee terrified me so much I was crying and had bad dreams later. Thanks, Uncle Walt!

I saw this movie when it first came out and was scared to death. I had nightmares for years. I am now 62 and I bought a DVD of it about a year ago. I have not watched it yet, because I remember being so scared. I am going to try to watch it soon. I hope I don't have the same nightmares.

Don't you wish Disney still did scary movies. I just watched Kidnapped. The scene where David Balfour climbs the stairs also gave me nightmares. My wife wants me to watch Something Wicked This Way Comes, which she says gave her nightmares. I have never seen it. I am a little scared.

reply

I hope you survived, I am 32 years old and I watched it again for the first time in such a long time. Yeah it still gives me the heebee geebees but all I did was read my novels and tried to forget the scary bitch then I had the nightmare of my past. This time I stood up against her. Fought her and told her to shut the *beep* up!

Something Wicked This Way Comes is a classic on par with Darby O'Gill, go watch it if you haven't already.

The banshee scene as a kid didn't scare me too much, just a little, but what really got to me was the scene when Darby is captured and the King says he can never leave, that struck me as dreadful and I worried about that for awhile as a kid, lol.

I think the movie captures very well the sense of unpredictable wild otherworldliness of fairy tales, the part that's between outright horror show and sugar coated treacle. Also, it's just a great bromance between Darby and King Brian, the drinking scene still cracks me up.
