Films in the '50s and early-'60s were often shot in black-and-white because of content. Comedies and musicals and epics were shot in color, but thrillers and grim social dramas shot in black-and-white.

It was not just about budget.

1966 was roughly the line in the sand, for both TV and movies. Very few films were made in black-and-white after that, and when they were it was highly unique.

The vast majority of B/W films were not filmed that way for art sake. They were filmed in B/W because of cost.

No. Many films were indeed shot that way for art sake.

Prior to the mid 50s, most films were indeed shot in BW because of cost.

Between the mid 50s and mid 60s, art had much more to do with this decision.

Later than that, the filmmaker really had to have a lot of clout to use BW.

Why not?
