John Wayne was just ahead of his time

with this casting.
Today anybody can play anybody.
Samuel L. Jackson can play Nick Fury, etc...

On the one hand it's admirable that John Wayne, whom a lot of Americans considered to be their tough hero in 1956, would play a Mongolian warlord. In many ways that's a big compliment.

Sig, you want a sig, here's a SIG-sauer!

Nick Fury is a fictional character. Genghis Khan is a historical figure, revered as one of the greatest Emperors in history, who had the largest Empire in history. What a ridiculous comparison. Having John Wayne play Khan would be like giving the role of Neil Armstrong to Idris Elba. It would be laughable.

Or a black actress playing, say, Anne Boleyn! 😆

Oh, wait...

My understanding is that John Wayne had one film left to fulfill his contract. This was the one he made.

What people always miss is Mongolian actors were scarce in Hollywood back in the 50's.
