Best American Film of the 50s?
Yea, I think so.

It was a very fine film, but the 50s was a good decade for movies in general, especially dramas. My vote would go to my all time favorite- "12 Angry Men."
shareMy personal favorite is Limelight (1952), which I rate 10/10.
Volker Flenske: (While torturing David) I don't know why you're doing this to yourself!
On the Waterfront is engrossing and very good, and the male performances are incredible, but I wouldn't call it the best film of 1954, let alone of the entire decade. Actually, On the Waterfront probably wouldn't make my top-ten list for the decade of the 1950s, if I were to make one.
Of course, since Alfred Hitchcock was at his peak in the 1950s, his films crowd out many others.
If you're interested, 12 Angry Men leads the pack in terms of IMDb ratings.
shareNope, that honor goes to Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

Nah, that's Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

An 11-year-old thread and no one has tossed Mr. Roberts out there yet?

12 Angry Men is the best film in the 1950's and is also one of the greatest films of all time. Should be in everyone top 10 list, at the least. I'm surprised it didn't win best picture, easily the best movie that year.
