I wondered about this too. She had an English accent, or at least sounded like it, in the film but she visited London on her tour in the beginning to she can't be English.

I think that anyone who learns English in Europe (including Miss Hepburn) does so with a British accent, unless they're attending an American school. Regardless, her country isn't important (which is why its identity is ambiguous), the fact that she's stifled by royal life is. I can't believe people are so hung up on this.

It is quite obvious to me that the Princess depicted in this movie is from the Kingdom of McGuffin.

Ehhh, it's just fun to think about. It's one of my favorite movies so I enjoy all the little details.

There's a coat of arms on the plane that brings the country's secret service men (cool plane, too, very rare). Can anybody decipher?

reply

There's nothing to decipher. This is a modern fairy tale (read: FICTION) that was inspired by Princess Margaret's popularity.

Popularity due to her relationship with the commoner Townsend around that time? It seems that the "exposure" of her relationship with him around the time the movie came out greatly benefited the box-office- but it doesn't appear that it was the inspiration for it, as the movie apparently had already been filmed by the time news of the Margaret-Townsend affair was made public around the time of her sister Elizabeth's Coronation that year (1953). http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046250/board/thread/212904585

Popularity due to the fact that she was a very beautiful and very stylish media darling and had been before the Townsend story broke shortly after The Queen's coronation in June of 1953. Roman Holiday premiered in August of '53 and one would have to assume that it had been in production before the Townsend romance went public, i.e. the movie had nothing to do with the romance. Everything she did back then was news. I have memories of seeing quite a bit of Princess Margaret news coverage while growing up in the early '50s (in the papers; we didn't have a TV until later) and well beyond that, including the Beatles' presentation to her at their Command Performance. The press in those days, however, was a lot more respectful than they were by the time Diana married into the Royal Family.
