Which one's better...

Which one do you think is better: the original House of Wax or the remake?

I personally would go for the remake.

What do you think?

You must be either kidding or a 10 year old. The 2005 remake is one of the worst films ever made. Just awful.

This version (1953) is wonderful. Vincent Price is perfect in his first big horror role.

reply

definitely the original
the remake was just too awful and not scary at all

Well, considering the remake is basically just another in a long line of "young, poorly defined characters die one by one" horror movies and the original is a classic of the genre, I think I'll go with the original. I'm not opposed to remakes and there are modern horror movies that I love, but the House of Wax remake is abominable in every way.

This one. Beautiful and atmospheric.

The 1953 version is my favorite - hard to beat Vincent Price and the early creepy role for Bronson. I just watched it again on TCM. I like the old 1933 version almost as much, which also just played on TCM, like a double feature.
btw, there was also another unofficial remake in 1969, Nightmare in Wax, starring Cameron Mitchell as the demented artist. It was not as good, of course, but for fans of the classic Price version, it's interesting to see as yet another variation.

Remake? 'The House of Wax' is a clone of 'The Mystery of the Wax Museum (1933),' a far superior film, with Lionel Atwill, Fay Wray and Glenda Farrell. The colorized version is excellent and it bodes well for the costume designer, who adorns Glenda and Fay with outfits that would be 'cool' today. Glenda looks terrific in a knit suit and orange and black scarf. The morning of 7/7/2015, TCM aired old movies that had been colorized........amazingly.

MYSTERY OF THE WAX MUSEUM and DR. X, were both originally filmed in 2-strip TECHNICOLOUR. They were not "Colourised". WB also had prints made in regular Black and White, for Theatres that were not equipped for Colour Technology.

I do hope he won't upset Henry...

I haven't seen the original version but as heretical as that may sound I vastly prefer the recent remake to the 1953 version. Let's not look at the past with rose-tinted glasses. It was all talk and no horror with hammy acting through and through. The remake was just a dumb teenie slasher but at times it was actually atmospheric and unsettling. The 1953 version has a few great images but overall it fell short because the dramatic structure wasn't strong enough to support the running time. The only thing I got out of it was the realization that 3D was always useless. That scene with the ping pong player bouncing his balls at the camera was hilarious. Apparently cheap gimmicky remakes aren't such a novelty after all.
There are so many great movies from the fifties, I don't remotely feel this is one of them.
