Which one's better...

Which one do you think is better: the original House of Wax or the remake?

I personally would go for the remake.

What do you think?

reply

The original is brilliant. The in name only remake is utter dog sh*t, and only a low grade moron....like your typical young American....could possibly appreciate it. For them, the original would sadly be pearls before swine.

Well put, Nemesis.

The original OP should note that House Of Wax was essentially a remake of the Mystery Of The Wax Museum. So originally, I thought the remake with Vincent was an improvement over the original and lord knows what a fool I look by stating the remake was better. Actually people should note that not all remakes are always inferior and that classic Hollywood remade movies/stories are a more regular basis than they do today. (Just review Warners or Howard Hawks catalogue of 1930 - 1970.)

Main reason...Lionel Atwill was a very good character actor...Vincent Price was the greatest horror actor.

Well, there are 3 versions - the 1933, this one (1953), and 2005 with Paris Hilton.

I'll take the 1953 remake with Vincent Price any day! :)

reply

Amen to that :D

reply

No real comparison -- Price's pic is a classic well done horror film; the recent remake a typical slasher flick. Young folks will generally like the latter naturally. Don't make it better.

The original. This version provides a plot in my opinion. And surprisingly the woman isn't a piece of furniture. Not very scary though. Similarities are Jarrod and his assistant are both mad and murderers as in the remake. Two insane killers.

I haven't seen House Of Wax, but I would guess the original is better, since it has Vincent Price, though I DO think the remake has a cooler poster.

The 2005 House of Wax is an abysmal film. The only things I genuinely like about that one... are the settings (as cheap as some of them looked)... and looking at Elisha Cuthberth in her prime.

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

First of all, HoW 1953 is a remake, too.

Secondly, HoW 2005 is actually a remake of Tourist Trap, not HOW. But since hardly anyone has ever heard of TT they decided to call it HOW.

Just sayin.' I don't consider the 2005 version and the 1953 version to be comparable since they have basically no relation except the title and one character in HoW 2005 being named "Vincent" as a very weak way to connect two unrelated films.
