Flubs/Mistakes
Can anybody name any flubs, bloopers, mistakes from any of the Classic 39?
shareFrom "Mama Loves Mambo."
Ralph is steamed. He says to Alice: "A mambo dancer has to move in next door! It couldn't be a cook or a chef so he could teach you how to cook!"
That really contradicts at least a few episodes where Alice is considered an excellent cook.
Ralph, I forget what the context was or where he said it, but tried to say a president's name, and said "Chester A. Arthurchester!"
shareI forget which one it was but there's a scene where Ralph and Ed are on a train compartment with bunkbeds. They later on become handcuffed (I think Ed thought he had the key) but for the scene to work Gleason had to be on the other side of Norton. So Gleason yells "Hey Is that Alice?" and walking past Norton goes to the door and looks out. It wasn't Alice but when he comes back he's on the right side.
Alice had gone missing somehow. I think she missed the train
I recall that. It was the Racoon Convention episode, which I thought was one of my favorite episodes. A couple of times Norton just waves that monster mask in front of Ralph without saying anything - and the non-verbal exchange is priceless.
shareIn “Head of the House", while Ralph and Ed are preparing the meal for Joe Fensterblau, Ralph makes two mistakes. Ed asks Ralph how much rice to cook. Ralph tells him to use the whole box saying “In case it’s too much I won’t eat any”. When Ralph puts the chicken in the oven he says “I’ll turn it up full. It’ll cook in twice the time”.
Speaking of which, if I recall, Ralph pulls the burnt chicken out of the oven with his bare hand.
shareThere's an episode called "Songs and Witty Sayings", which I've seen only once. It opens with Ralph meeting Norton for lunch at a manhole cover. They start to discuss possible acts for a talent show. Norton begins to recite a nursery rhyme a lot like "Old MacDonald Had a Farm". At some point, he goes way off the rails on his lines. Not as Norton, but as a mix of Norton and Art Carney, actor, he says to Ralph: "Is this doing anything for you?" Not as Ralph, but as Gleason the actor, the reply comes: "Not particularly, no.". Then they fall straight back into character and story line.
I thought that was absolutely charming and wonderful, and have been searching for that episode ever since so I could watch it again.
LOL. Things like this make me miss this kind of live TV.
shareIn the episode where Ralph and Ed try to prove something to Alice by getting drunk, there are all kinds of ad-libs. Norton tries to pour the wine over his bent elbow and spills some on the table, Gleason ad-libs:" either that's wine on the table or somebody was just stabbed upstairs." also, at one point Glesason acting in a drunken fashion says;" I feel like i have hair on my face." you can tell by Carney's reaction that this was unscripted. For the most part, if there was mistake or ad-lib it came from Gleason, the other three cast members were impeccable in their professionalism, but Gleason liked the energy that came along with the anxiety of not rehearsing too much, he filled his productions with so called 'Gleason actors' actors and actresses who didn't need too much rehearsal and were quick on their feet when somebody blew a line.Gleason neve worried about blowing a line e knew he could get out of anything by yelling or getting upset with one of the other characters and showing the kind of confidence that never made the audience any the wiser that something had gone wrong
probably the biggest mistake comes in one of the Lost episodes;"Stand-in for murder." where Ed is suppose to leave the room so two hood looms could talk about there plans for knocking off Ralph. But the door won't open, one of the hoods yells at Ed, " Can't you get out of here." Carney responds by saying " Yes i can." and either walks around the set, or pulls an opening in the set, and walks out."
In "Mama loves Mambo," I believe Carney entered the apartment too early in one scene. He walks in, appears to recognize his mistake, says something like "SHEESH!" then sort of stands in the background with nothing to do for a few minutes while Ralph and Alice argue. Gleason appears to try to cover for him a bit by lamenting that every husband was now having to eat cold suppers "including him!" as he gestured to Norton.
In the bowling/bad back episode, it looks like Gleason was a few seconds late in one scene on his cue to enter the apartment. In the final scene, after his bowling buddies drop off the trophy and leave, Alice and Trixie are talking about how irresponsible Ralph was, with Trixie finally saying something like "These men of ours, you have to treat them like children!" It looks like that's where Ralph is supposed to come in, but he doesn't, and there's a brief moment of dead air before Alice says "He went bowling, hurt his back --" and then Gleason comes in. The last line doesn't seem like something you'd put in a script, it looked to me like Audrey Meadows was vamping until Gleason showed up.
