My choice(opinion out of hollywood today) would maybe be Rachel McAdams for Lucy Muir...... what are your guy's thoughts/opinions on characters if they ever were to remake this amazing film? :)
I hate remakes, and this seems to be all Hollywood can do anymore, slaughter good movies and tv shows. Hollywood no longer has talented writers or versatile actors/actresses anymore, those days are all gone. Hollywood of today would not do the original movie justice. Oh please Hollywood DO NOT make a remake!! Why not just keep showing the original, there are a lot of people who actually love to watch the old, original films and forget about making it "up to date"? - just my 2 cents
βFasten your seat belts. It's going to be a bumpy night!β ~Bette Davis in "All About Eve"
I also hate most remakes and deplore the modern heavy reliance on cranking them out (instead of attempting original projects).
That said, more than 10 years ago on eBay I bought a copy of a script for a "proposed but abandoned" remake of MRS. MUIR which the seller claimed was tailored for Sean Connery. I could easily see Connery in the role; especially 20 or 30 years ago. But I'm happier still that the key word was "abandoned."
And by the way, I realize I never did get around to opening that script. My wife's seriously after me to toss stuff in our basement, so maybe by now I should start there!
Most great films deserve a more appreciative audience than they get.
As others have said, I'm not keen on remakes either, but for the captain I'd choose Toby Stephens - have you seen him as Captain Flint in Black Sails? (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0827170/?ref_=rvi_nm) Super hot! He could possibly combine the slight menace of Captain Flint with his humorous character from Vexed.
Can't think of any modern actress as charming as Gene Tierny for Lucy.
I never thought I would ever think ANYONE could play this part except Rex but Oh my gosh, this man is perfect! And he bears a striking resemblance to Harrison- not so much the facial features but the facial expression and sizzling sex appeal Harrison emitted are also apparent in Toby Stephens.
I'd never heard of this actor before or the series Black Sails but I know what I'm going to be watching all this weekend.
Glad you think so! Toby Stephens is truly amazing in Black Sails - he's the only reason I've watched it, but the series does have a weird hypnotic quality to it (or maybe it's because I watched an episode a night!). His eyes, omg - I'm not a fan of blue eyes, but his eyes are so expressive. Yes, like Rex Harrison's.
If you don't know Toby Stephens, you should definitely become acquainted with him! He's the son of actors Robert Stephens (The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes) and Maggie Smith - great acting pedigree there! But he is a great actor on his own.
You can find loads more pics of him on the STARZ Black Sails website: http://www.pirates-wanted.com (the series is coming back January 2015. Hooraahh!)
Yeah, totally lusting!
(Oh and check out Toby Schmitz who plays Jack - he's very good (and yummy) too.)
I finished watching Season One of Black Sails this past weekend and now that I've seen Toby Stephens as Captain Flint I'm more than convinced he would make a perfect Captain Gregg. Toby Stephens is absolutely fantastic as a sea captain.
I'm now addicted to this series- Season two can't come fast enough!
Very interesting season. I'm wasn't too keen on what the did with his character in the back story, but overall it was good. Sadly we'll have to wait until 2016 for season 3. Maybe in the meantime, someone can convince a producer to remake The Ghost and Mrs Muir with Toby as Captain Gregg!
How could any red-blooded heterosexual woman who has spent week after week in a state of pure, unadulterated, animalistic lust over Captain Flint be keen to find out what was revealed in his back story?
I sat in front of the T.V. screen in stunned shock before screaming,"No! No! It can't be true! Oh please, Lord, don't let it be true!"
I'm downright pissed off- which in the United States means I'm more than a little ticked.
I hear ya! I was sooo depressed for days - I couldn't even speak about it with DH who hadn't watched it with me. They did us straight gals a disservice. WARNING PLOT SPOILERS: Not only that, but the character of Miranda made no sense (which is probably why they had to kill her off). I mean, what wife is going to sit there and watch her hubby start smooching with the guy she's been trying to get in the sack for a few weeks, lol. Even if she did know of her husband's proclivities (which she obviously did, hence her having to find some solace elsewhere), she'd be like 'hold on there - he's mine!' She doesn't even roll her eyes. It was like, here we go again. I'm sorry, if I had a young TS in my sights I'd be like 'hell no you don't!' She only gets riled when she realises that they are in danger of being exposed and says that she is outraged. Miranda got a lot of bad comments which were unjust, I thought. She was trying to keep the high ground.
I've often thought that the motivations of the female characters in BS made no sense. Funnily enough, a woman wrote that episode.
Sorry to be so OT to this thread, but one can't feel but strongly about it.
p.s. I'm American, happen to live in the UK (hubby's British).
Your husband's British- you lucky dog. An English accent is the sexiest in the entire world.
My best friend is British but she's lived here in the states for many years. When her single brother came to visit we took him sightseeing and around town. He's a pretty good looking guy and he got his share of looks from the ladies just based upon his looks but when he opened his mouth and spoke you should have seen the women melt by the dozen.
I'm really surprised you don't get Black Sails in the UK- especially considering how many of the cast are British actors and that much of the story is set in British surroundings- London, English Nassau, British colonies, Royal Navy ect.
I'm still trying to work out this three way thing between Miranda, Flint, and Thomas. It seems as if Flint was shared between Thomas and Miranda- the two of them didn't seem to mind that he was sleeping with both of them.
I'm wondering if perhaps it might be someone's personality that attracts Flint to them. That it is the person themselves that Flint falls for regardless of their gender.
There's an actor in the series Lost Girl who always reminded me of Rex Harrison, his name is Kristen Holden Ried. I think he would be a good choice. And yes, Rachel Mcadams for Mrs. Muir.
You are absolutely 100% correct--no remake should be attempted. No present day actor of Gene Tierney's age has the looks with the necessary gravitas (and yet light-heartedness at the same time). But that's not really the inquiry in this thread. So the key is to think of actors who would screw it up the least.
I think Sean Bean could be the Captain. Olivia Wilde could get the look right, but I'm just not sure she has the maturity to be Mrs. Muir. Ricky Gervais as the rental agent (that might be going too far!).
But theyβd make it Mr. Muir who is a black gay man who just lost his Hispanic husband and the Captain would reveal that he was always gay too and experienced several escapades with his sailor men back in the day.
