Just outstanding - just watched this movie on DVD, first time I've seen it in years. I've seen Lupino in "High Sierra" - also with Bogart but I think she's better in this.

You mean anytime she doesn´t go in her hysteria mode? Her court testimony in particular was a pretty ridiculous thing to look at. Not that the movie had been great, anyway - started off as a sort-of-interesting blue collar drama about truckers, then meandered off for quite a while in search of a storyline and then settled into this underdeveloped blackmail/court drama. The conclusion of which was not only poorly acted, but also generally rushed and hard to take.

She was perfect all through the film, until that manic laughter à la Wicked Witch of the West was indeed overdone ... a pity because so far, she gave the best performance of the film. Honorable mention to the scene-stealing Alan Hale Sr as the lovable buffoon, made his death even sadder ...
