Without a doubt, the best film ever made

IMO, Metropolis trumps even Kane and The Godfather as a masterpiece of film. Opinions?

I'm just going to respond without reading the rest of the comments.... then I might read some and comment.

To me, it is better than the Godfather, but not better than Kane. But that's not really the issue. It is a very powerful film in terms of images, the iconography of the thing. In a lot of ways, the ideas in the film are ridiculous. The characters are even more ludicrous, poorly developed, etc. Doesn't really matter when everything is working, and this film is aided by its silence. It has a kind of universality.

The Godfather and Citizen Kane are what I would call complete films in that they don't really have any noteworthy flaws; everything comes together quite perfectly. The silliness, the dumb naivete of the content of Metropolis is, however, so pervasive that it does drag it down somewhat, no matter how great the visuals or how iconically awe-inspiring the spectacle. It's a great film, but not the greatest silent - and not the greatest work Lang ever created, either (as far as I'm concerned, that'd be Das Testament Des Dr Mabuse).

this movie should easily be in the top 10 on imdb's list.

I agree with audierules, I think that "Metropolis" pounds on the plot points harder than it needs to and could be much shorter without losing any of the story. It is, however, visually spectacular. A lot of the running time is spent on marvelous visual sequences that must have been overpowering, mesmerizing at the time.

Ridiculous. Story is weak, could have been done far better, more efficient, and without all the mumbo-jumbo.

I find it a bit odd that you ask for opinions without really giving yours - yes, you state it's the best ever in your opinion, but why?

It's a fact this is the greatest film masterpiece of all time, there's literally nothing wrong with it, it's just pure perfection.
