Without a doubt, the best film ever made

IMO, Metropolis trumps even Kane and The Godfather as a masterpiece of film. Opinions?

reply

I am not an expert. I just like watching good films. I enjoy a good super hero film, I like costume dramas, horror films, action-thrillers etc. So I am not biased in any way just because a film is "ahead of its time" etc.

I just saw Metropolis for the first time and I think it is one of the best films ever made and it is one of the very few films on IMDb which received a 10/10 from me.

Simple but powerful story, excellent acting, great music. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

I am not sure if it is the best film but I think it belongs in the top 10. There are many more films I wanna see. I couldn't even complete the IMDb top 250 yet. Let this be my new year resolution :)

Excuse my English please. I am not a native speaker.

Glad to find someone else with eclectic tastes. I'm not into horror much, except the old classics (Bella Lugosi, Boris Karloff, etc - the stuff that Svengoolie has on his show) because the newer horror gives me nightmares!

reply

Completely agreed. Even though some of the film has been lost or damaged, Metropolis is unparalleled by any other movie made in the past 90 years. Not only is the film so visually beautiful, but its plot and message are timeless. I could listen to the soundtrack alone and still be utterly amazed - still hoping that I can see this film with a live orchestra some day.

reply

Yep, it sure is.
I'm sure one day a finer film will be made, but I don't really want to be around when it does.

did you ever pick your feet in Poughkeepsie?

reply

..or worse, someone will try to remake this film!

You are entitled to my opinion, whether you want it or not!!

The horror...the horror.
If that day comes, I hope Martin Sheen is about to chop me up.

did you ever pick your feet in Poughkeepsie?

....and even worse, it could be someone like Tim Burton who does it!

ARE YOU STILL PICKING YOUR FEET IN POUGHKEEPSIE!???

RaoulAktar: this is a line from several scenes in "The French Connection". It was used by Popeye Doyle just to confuse perps and rattle them.

reply

Just because something isn't used anymore doesn't mean it's useless; the reason that genre of acting was there was BECAUSE there was no sound.

And yet, I thought the acting was some of the best I've seen; no, not THE best, but it was still beyond excellent.

Best film ever made? It's a stretch, and by who's opinion other than your own?

However, I can agree it's one of the best film's I've ever seen, and a precursor to later epic movies.

It's in HIS opinion. Why would you even ask a question like this? He's saying that it is the best film ever made in HIS opinion. But this goes without saying. Everything is opinionated so there shouldn't be a need for everybody to add "in my opinion" after every sentence. You just have to realise that they are giving us their opinion because they are interested in hearing our own opinions... So yes, it is only in HIS opinion...

However, I disagree with you that it is a stretch. Great film? Yes... One of the best? Yes... Best of them all, of all time?.. IN MY OPINION, UNTHINKABLY CLOSE... I think that that certain title would go to either:
Det Sjunde Inseglet (1957)
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Tôkyô Monogatari (1953)
Shichinin no Samurai (1954)
OR Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes (1972)

For me, Metropolis (1927) comes #7 on my best films ever list, which you can find here: http://www.imdb.com/list/nVbRhKYeCXI/

I think it's better than Kane, but definitely not better than The Godfather.

The best Film ever made? Hm

I think thats impossible to say. It's art. It's subjective.

If I should try: 2001

It's definitely one of them. Kane and the Godfather are really overrated films in my opinion.

reply

Not really. They deserve all the praise they get
