I guess it's just to appease to the "diversity", although Laverne Cox fills more checkboxes and is an equally bad actor.
That's what I was going to say...why? He isn't particularly engaging or charismatic. His speaking voice is unremarkable. I hate to chalk it up to a diversity-hire. Maybe he attracts a certain age group that Hideo is looking to market to.
